3DS max mesh question

Hey all.

I've watched quite a few of Nightasay's tutorials ( I'm not allowed to post links with my account, but look for Nightasay on youtube ) on making custom armors and I've done that successfully a few times. I'm getting comfortable with the workflow, but I would like to be able to make other custom meshes besides armor. I modeled a custom sword and made some changes to the Falmer mesh, but where I run into problems is with how or when to apply a skin wrap.

It seems like from what I've seen on Nightasay's tutorials a skinwrap should be used when a mesh is wrapped around another mesh, like when armor is applied to a body mesh. But I'm just not sure.

Should a creature mesh have a skin wrap applied, or should a weapon? Can someone explain this to me?

All you need to know about weapons, not sure about creatures.

I've seen that video before. He does the actual weapon modeling off screen and never covers skin wrap at all. He literally imports a stock weapon, imports his pre designed model over it, orients it with the original and exports. That's all he covers about the modeling aspects.
