You can't get a house in Riverwood but Hod or Gurdur will give you a key to their house, depending on whether you left Helgen with the stormcloak or imperial.

Mate, just kill Faendal That's what I did. Kill him and you can sleep in his house and all xD If you would like to dispose of his body, just resurrect him with a necromancy spell and when he dies he becomes dust

Thats odd, I never got the key from either of them, when does this happen, after the main quest?

Depends, if you left with Hadvar you can use Alvors house and if you left with Ralof, you can use Hods house.

Same with me. When I left with Hadvar I didn't get the key so I always had to pick their lock.
Though when I left with Ralof I got a key.

You might not want to kill Faendal just yet. I gave Sven's letter to the girl in the Trader place and told her that Sven wrote it trying to make Faendal look bad, or whichever option is the truth. After that, I spoke with Faendal and there was an option to trade. His key was option to take. I then was able to go into his house and he followed me, but there were many free things there.
