About "Exception handling"

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 9:18 am

Currently, Rage has some serious issues. When I started Rage, I soon learned, that it really holds up to its title, because within seconds, I was in a rage.

How can a game crash on launch and throw now exception containing the issue?
Even if this would be a driver issue, as proclaimed by Bethesda, why does the game run into the issue and does not intercept the exception?

Just to clarify what I mean:

Let's say, the game requires a certain driver version, lets say Catalyst 11 for example, because it uses features provided by this driver which are unavailable on previous versions.
Then, the game should at first actually check for the driver version instead of using functions of it and crashing with a windows "Rage has stopped working" exception! This wont help anyone, everybody is disappointed.

So please Bethesda, try exception handling. It's not too hard ... if you are capable of creating so great games, with so many lines of code, than please try to catch errors and display messages to the customers as well as to some log, so you can fix the error.

Currently, it is said that there are some "driver issues" with AMD. Well, every game except Rage runs great! I have no issues at all and stunning frame rates in every game. So what is this "driver issue" you are speaking of? And why don't you have a workaround? If you want to use features that are not available on graphics drivers from one out of 2 companies, than dammit, DON'T USE IT - or at least make the game work without that features.

I really don't understand how this game got through quality assurance with so many issues.

Before you close this thread and declaring this post as a rant, what about saying that you are sorry? Like Square did with Final Fantasy 14, or like Sony, when they had to admit, that their network and system security was [censored].

Rage for PC, as it is, is a shameful release. I hope, you prepare something special for those who can't enjoy your game because you failed to release it in a state, that would satisfy your customers. FF 14 is still free to play, and Sony at least gave away some free games.

I agree with the contents of this thread fully. I find it ironic that John Carmack has the audacity to talk about testing at length in a recent interview but they subsequently release a game with less quality than Duke Nukem Forever.

Wait a minute did you just compared RAGE with DukeNukemForever ?
Its a whole diffrent thing.. Megatextures are completely NEW i dont doubt that the game is far from running good but i would never dare to compare this with a unmanly second hand duke game seriously.
Second its not only "ATI folks" having problems -----
Nvidea poeple like me also have problems
and cant enjoy the game in its full glory and lets face it ,we all want to do so if we wouldnt we would not argue about this on a bethesda forum or would we.
But i do agree that there should be a error message stating whats the main problem or at least it should puke a error code at us.
Rage is in deed stepping into brinks footsteps at this point but we should be a little pationed since i bet my left ear that ID and bethesda dont want to let this sit on them
Them r probably working on a fix right now so chill and give them a little time im also unpationed since the game is crashing for me also.

megatextures arent NEW. Doom 3 to Quake 4 all used em in there own ways, Quake Wars was the first official use of the technology being called that.

you can try to twist my words if you want, but the technology of id tech 5 and megatextures has been in the work since Doom 3. Yes it is much improved, but the base technology framework is the same.
