Its essentially a command creature spell. Makes an animal fight for you for a certain amount of time. Not sure on the exact details yet but you get the gist.

But it lasts for 60 sec and then what runs off? seems a bit of a bad ability

Well hey, most wood elves spend their time in...the woods. So having an otherwise hostile wolf (or whatever) fight for you even for a short period of time could come in handy.
