Account Security - Authenticator

Post » Wed Jan 16, 2013 12:51 pm

I'm hoping that TESO will have an option to enable an account authenticator. I don't want a physical authenticator but I want an app for my iPhone.

The authenticator should have the option of asking me for the code each log on or if my IP changes.
It should have a unique code that I can jot down and use to reset my authenticator should I replace my iPhone.
Physical authenticators should be free, just pay shipping and handling.

This thread isn't about how good or bad Apple/iPhone is. This thread is about an authenticator for our accounts.

I use an Authenticator app to get on my VPN at work. Even using it once a day, it is a pain to use this. I can't imagine with game restarts and the like how intrusive this would be to my gaming experience.

It should be for each time a new IP connects/tries to log into the account. Then, the only real issue is for those with Dynamic IP's, where their IP changes either over time, or each time their modem is restarted.

I like the ones that you can use on smart phones, the random number is not that big of a pain to input in when logging in. Would be nice to not have to use them anymore, but it is pretty normal now.

Think its safe to say at this point with MMOs that an authenticator is a standard and required feature. For WoW you have the option of having to enter the code for every log in or juts once a week. Personally I enter it every time i log in, had my WoW account hacked so yeah an extra few seconds at login is well worth it.

As far as it being intrusive to your gaming? Taking 5 more seconds to enter a code after you enter your password is hardly intrusive compared to having your account stolen and the possible lose of your game characters at best and having your private info (CC #) stolen at worst.

If I have to click on more than the Quick Launch Icon to launch the game, it's intrusive to me playing that game. And, what if I don't have a smart phone to put this app on? Then what?

I am willing to put in a user/pass for the game, but to have to fire up another app to authenticate me? On possibly another device? No thanks.

That's why I mentioned it should only ask for it after your IP changes. ie you're at home log in, it'll ask. You log in again at home and it wont ask. You log in at work, it'll ask. You return home and log in, it'll ask.
