A 1h weapon with magicka steal on hit. Since your focus is magic, your weapon skill will be low and won't be very effective on higher levels.

A staff. Seriously.

But if your mage feels like he needs to carry a back-up weapon, I would find one that has some personal meaning to you. My first pure mage carried a dagger for that purpose, until one day he managed to kill a draughr deathlord at relatively low level, and the deathlord dropped an ebony greatsword, so my mage took it, smithed it to the best of his limited smithing ability and enchanted it with some powerful enchantments. It made a great backup weapon because it had a story behind it.

And anytime another mage pulled a weapon on him, he would draw his enchanted ebony greatsword and show them what's what.

Ebony shows up pretty early if you fight draughr deathlords. I don't think my character that got the ebony greatsword was much above level 15. May have to wait longer if you want to find it at a chest or a vendor. I have had several characters make it up to level 40 or so and never found a daedric weapon. I hear they are rare at any level. If you want to know the exact level for the drops, you could always check the UESP or wikia.

You will normally start to find better weapons as you level up. You don't have to be a smith to find Ebony and Daedric stuff. But it will take a long time untill they start to drop/spawn at an acceptable rate.

You can use conjured weapons, which are daedric. But you will need som magicka to cast it.

And you need a perk in mystic binding or your conjured weapons will only be equal to steel in quality.

Why would an alchemist-mage ever run out of magicka? It's inconceivable.

I enjoy archery. In low levels I use a bow to continue inflicting damage while my magicka regenerates. I also use a bow to deliver poisons to make magic more effective.

There is weakness to fire, weakness to frost, weakness to shock, weakness to magic, and weakness to poison.

When I fight dragons, I usually slowly pelt them with incinerate or icy spears, but if I want to kill them fast, I add some potions and poisons.

If you have Marked for Death Shout. Longbow is good enough.

An unsmithed longbow is also enough to deliver those poisons you mentioned. My necrovamp mage carries no weapons other than an unsmithed longbow for just that purpose, although he rarely remembers to use it and never needs to.

The greatsword, or any 2H weapon, is great close quarters backup choice. Just because of the ability to effectively utilize the hotkeys better than a 1H weapon. You can equip two different spells, set the LH spell to (1) and the 2H weapon to slot (2). Then it is a very smooth transition and keeps the RH selected spell when the hotkey is activated.

However, a ranged attack from a bow is probrbly the safest option aside form the absolute wisest option of...RUN!

Then again, a potion carrying Alchemist should have access to an unlimited arsenal of 1000 reasons to never be in a Magicka shortage to start with.

EDIT : A note on the use of staves...

IF the Staff of Magnus actually worked properly and did in fact "absorb" magicka. It would be THE single best staff in the game, for a mage.

Yeah, what's up with that staff? It never did much of anything for me other than as a pretty decoration.

I just checked the UESP and it mentions this bug on the talk page but not on the main page. I never knew it was bugged but that explains a lot.
