Advice on what pony to buy?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:33 pm

I'm thinking of something to buy, and I'm torn between a good mouse and a Razer Hydra.

I'm happy with my cheap mouse but everyone is telling me how great gaming mice are, and I'm a back-up team member for a competitive gaming team, so a new mouse might be good.

But I've also been looking at the Razer Hydra, and I'll be honest, it looks pretty awesome. Half Life 2 and Portal has true support, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 plan to add it soon, and it's compatible with many games. But one thing is bothering me, it's expensive, at $140 I'd never spend that much on a mouse.
I think it would be fun to play the games I know and love in a new way. Also having a Hydra would help force my way onto the team that's making a game mod I'm really interested in, since no-one on the team has one, I could test the game with the Hydra for them.

What do you guys think?

Buy something you want, not something for competitive team. You'll be happy you didn't come a year or two when they stop playing the game.

Between a mouse and the Hydra, I'd go with a mouse. Competitive gaming team and motion sensors do not mix well.

If you like your current mouse though maybe you should consider a mechanical keyboard. Gaming mice really offer nothing to a competitive gamer except buttons and [potentially] a nice shape. My mouse can go up to 5700 DPI but I only use it at 1600. I'd use it at less if my desk was bigger.

I'm using the Razer Naga Mouse. As well as a Razer Blackwidow Battlefield 3 keyboard. I find that Razer makes good products. The Naga feels so nice to use.

Stick with the mouse. They're cheaper and better for comp.

This, although the Hydra seems pretty awesome.

I never understood why someone thought it made sense for one hand to be in charge of pointing and two buttons while the other hand was in charge of every button on a keyboard that doesn't fit the hand very well.

If you are looking for a more comfortable gaming experience, get a mouse that has a lot of buttons. Give your keyboard hand a break by mapping some of the common functions to the mouse!

I'm completely fine with my current keyboard and mouse though, and the Hydra would be fun to play around with in a lot of game, especially Portal 2.

Plus the Hydra gets me a spot on the team for a mod without requiring me to develop significant other skills, I mean I can't afford most audio programs and most SDKs baffle me.
