After 13 hours and 8 different rolls...

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 2:57 pm

I'm not entirely sure if there's something wrong with me or not but for whatever reason I find myself playing 2 hours or so with a specific type of character only to begin thinking, "man, I think I would enjoy this more if I played it this way". Then, I remake a different race with a different approach and the same thing happens. I've never really played an RPG before and have always been particular to the RTS genre.

I guess I came here to look for someone to push me to play a specific type of character, What do you guys think, with my minimal RPG experience, would be a good playstyle? Can anybody please make a few suggestions for me?

Thank you.

The beauty of Skyrim is whatever you want :) only you can decide what sort of playstyle you would prefer.

I wouldn't make my first character a mage if I were you. Try doing stealth or warrior. And you don't really need to keep re-"rolling". (On a side note, you don't roll characters in Skyrim...)

You will become whatever you actually use. Pick a race based on the abilities they grant, not so much their starting bonus to skills. Skills level up quickly enough to not matter.

I understand this. But still, is there anything at all that you could recommend to me?

Cheers.

As others have said, only you can come up with the exact style of play you want to go with, and the type of character you want to be. Maybe it'd be better to not set in your mind the specific type of character each one will be, and play it by ear until you settle into a style you are really enjoying. Give your character an overall framework, and let the specifics of that characters style fill themselves in as you play.

Figure out what you enjoy doing, pick a race you would pick if there were no stat bonuses or abilities, and remember that no one is forcing you to play. Do things you enjoy, go have fun with the story, just hang around a pub and listen to the pvssyr. The key to an rpg is what you enjoy.

Thank you all for the responses thus far. The thing is, I don't see myself having the time to invest into this game for a second playthrough. So, in trying to make this play through as enjoyable as possible, what could somebody recommend to me as a fun overall playstyle from beginning to end?

I'm looking for some personal opinions!

Thank you all.

I tried a few types, but ultimately I'm having the most fun with destruction/conjurer pure caster. The summoned pets from Conj serve as a distraction/tank and I just blast with high damage nukes. Lots of area damage for big groups too. I don't use weapons at all, just destruction spells (a few points into alchemy to fund your magika pot fund doesn't hurt), and so far I'm level 25 and have killed 5 dragons or so and I have not run into major issues. I have been using a summoned bound sword as a 1h wep now and then for trapping souls for enchanting, it works really well.

Sneak is a type in which you try to be stealthy and not be noticed while picking off people with usually a bow or daggers.

There is the standard warrior class in which he uses brute force to smash anything he doesn't like.

There is the mage who uses magic (obviously) to control or summon or just blast things apart.

Thieves can steal things from other people without noticing and is kind of up the sneak branch.

There is a type of playing using a "glass cannon" meaning your character hits hella hard but is very fragile. This is typically mages but other classes can also be this.

Mix and match is basically choosing many different playstyles and making a new one. You can be a heavy armor mage who refuses to die while dealing good damage (but at the same time loses mage bonuses) as an example.

There are many more but writing them all would take forever.

Elder Scrolls games are some of the few out that allow you to portray a personality in a meaningful fashion while beating the crud out of almost anything you choose. Some play to complete but I've always gotten the most out of this series by playing a 'person' rather than a playstyle with stats.

While many like to get the absolute best out of the system mechanics, its just not necessary. You can play a person who starts out thinking he has to be tough, fighting your way out of situations then realise that maybe just sneaking past your foe is smarter then evolving to burning down the world with magic. You can start out just wanting to survive, then seeking wealth, then following a sense of civic responsibility, to getting frustrated by the worlds politics and just buying a house and starting a family.

For me, the fun is not in building an awesome set of stats, but building a story arc for my character that sits above the plot lines in the world. Skyrim is very responsive to this and forgiving of being human and capricious. If you want to change your playstyle, just play differently, but with the same character.

If you're having trouble creating a starting personality just pick a fictional character you appreciate - though may not neccesairly like. Be a hero, a zealot, a villian, but respond how you think is realistic for the person you're playing. You said you're new to RPG's, you've chosen the best one to start playing with, enjoy!

...really, truly not inspired to do your own thing after that? Wear light armour, wield a dagger, master the bow and then lockpick and sneak to your hearts content, it's what I'm doing and I'm loving it :)

This is how I play. I wouldn't call myself an ultra serious roleplayer, but everytime I've played an ES games all my characters have had some kind of "purpose" or backstory to them, no matter how minor. I.E. I always have to play a bad-ass dark mage who is bent on control and evil massacure at least once :D

For my first play through I am about 17 hours in, only scratched the surface, farthest I've gotten outside of the Whiterun hold has been the riften one, and I've not visited a major city yet other than Whiterun. My character is a little more complicated than the above. I planned him out to be a warrior-paladin type, who's mostly interested in cutting down undead foes and specilizes in large Greatswords. That's the overall gameplay style I've decided on, as I've never played a knight character before and thought it would be fun to try it out for my first run of the game. Backstory wise I've set it up so he was apart of an old hidden werewolf clan from far off, but for some reason never got the beast blood ability, which is what prompted him to journy into Skyrim and have the game's events unfold. His overarching goal was to find the secret to becoming werewolf, and now that he is one, he's sworn to protect his new clan and do his duty as a chivalrous knight :)

It sounds goofy, but its a lot of fun to play like this ;) You don't have to be so involved with it, but just coming up with a character architype (I.E. assassin who's goal is to become the highest profile assassin in all the land) goes a long way in making any Elder Scrolls game a whole lot of fun to play. It's why I love these games, because they are really the only ones out there that let you create your own fantasy stories and play them out :) I do love many other games though of course. Elder Scrolls just has a special place in my heart.

I started out playing a High Elf destruction mage type.. err thingy. I didn't use weapons at all just dual wielded fire.. lots and lots of fire. I sort of enjoyed her, things certainly died quickly and the addition of a henchman (henchwoman?) helped to keep the bad things off of me but I kept on wishing I focused on other areas as I found the play style to be a little repetitive, cast oak armor, cast fire balls, let Lydia finish them off and rinse and repeat.

I rerolled to a Dark Elf thief who casts illusion spells and I'm having a lot of fun with it, sneaking about breaking into homes, pickpocketing (getting caught pickpocketing and killing poor Sven). Using the illusion spells is a great distraction while I sneak in closer and either finish things off with an arrow or sneak up behind them backstab. It's a very patient playstyle waiting for NPCs to be in that 'perfect' position to strike and not given to having an NPC follow you about - unless you like telling them to wait out of sight a lot. I've dabbled in Alchemy and Blacksmithing but as I'll continue to level I'll have to focus on something which will more than likely be Alchemy. The poisons are great and should be used before every 'tough' fight and having a ready supply of healing potions is great for the 'oh crap' moments.

The thing is - play how you like to play. If you want the extra protection of a shield, or dual wield sharp stabby things then go ahead you certainly won't be penalized for playing exactly how you like to play - in fact you'll be rewarded for it!

Skyrim is a game where you aren't supposed to be pushed to play and you can just be who you want but if you can't decide than roll a 10 sided dice or something
