After reading what happened in Civ V are you worried you may

Post » Mon Nov 15, 2010 11:20 am

I was reading alot of people having problems playing their game because of Steam. Some had some install issues, I think I read 3 of them. About 10 or so said, Steam was down so they couldn't play their game. So many people said this was impossible and can never happen. Well it looked like it did happen. So now I am wondering if some of you guys are worried if this will happend to you?

Yes were were told you can play in offline mode, but as I said, people said they still coudn't play. Some people even said because of steam, a few times they had to wait 30 minutes before they can play. So why did the impossible become possible then? I am worried about this. I think I will be getting this game for the 360, even though the stats tell me, my laptop will play it. (Which I am surprised that it is even playable, though not at max settings)

I just want to play when I want to. I would be pissed if Steam was down for what ever reason then you can't play your game. So now reading the problems from Civilization V, I am a bit worried now. I don't care about Mods, so I don't worry abou that so it seems no reason to get it for PC now.

Maybe I am old school. You play the game when you want, and not have to be connected to the internet to play a game. Also, can anyone explain to me why Steam goes down and people can't play their game. I find it weird if Steam is down, why some can't play their game, while others can. Maybe it's fear of the unknown. But when I read things like this, the fear dosn't go away.

I am not worried at all about Steam failing. I've used Steam for hundreds, probably thousands of hours, and the only times I've lost connection are when the servers are down for maintenance, but I can still play my games.

And I really don't see the point of going into offline mode with Steam if you have a constant Internet connection.

If Steam is down, you can in fact play your game - IF you've already installed the game while Steam was up *and* you're logged in to Steam in Offline mode (which basically means you've logged in to Steam while it was online and didn't manually log out - even if you turn the computer on and Steam is down it'll still start in Offline mode). This is how it works with every Steam game, not just Fallout NV or Civ 5.

Well this is nice to know. Thanks for letting me know. I am just wundering why then people couldn't play their game then. Frome reading their posts you can tell their were pissed. I am shure they knew about off line mode, and still coudln't play.

They probably had not installed it while Steam was online (and thus the game hadn't been activated yet), as that's required for activation. I've never seen any reports about that nor encountered any problems like that with Steam, so I'm unsure why they'd say stuff like that.

That said, if you truly don't care about mods, getting it for your 360 might be a better idea purely for performance reasons - laptops aren't generally the fastest computers around, so it might not run as well on that as it would on a console, and since you mentioned you were surprised it'd run on your laptop I doubt it's as powerful as a gaming PC. Personally, I'd never get a game like this for a console because the mods tend to make it a hundred times better, but it'll probably run better on a dedicated console than on a marginal PC.

I've never encountered problems such as that myself. But that doesn't necessarily mean they can't happen, after all, I've never been struck by lightning before either, still, I'm not really too worried about being unable to play the game becaus of Steam, I'm just really annoyed that I'm FORCED to use Steam to play the game. I could understand if this was a Valve game as if you have a game related program, it makes sense to use it in your own games, but in a third party game, there's no excuse.

I've been using Steam for 5 or 6 years now. It won't affect me if it bugs out.

This endless angst and fear directed at Steam. Why, I wonder? I've used Steam for quite some time, and have never experienced any of these so called problems. Neither have anyone I know, nor anyone I've met on the Internet. I've heard "stories" alright, but that's about it. I've heard stories of werewolves as well. Just saying.

And I play both on- and offline games without any trouble. The Steam servers have never failed during the numerous hours I've played TF2 for example. And I can still play STALKER and any other singleplayer games, even if my Internet connection is down.

People need to stop being so ridiculously "afraid" (because that's what they seem to be) of Steam.

People just like to rail against what's popular. I've never had a problem with steam and I have dozens of titles I've played over the years.

I hope we won't get the "This game is currently unavailable."-problem because the Steam-servers can't handle the pressure.

I have seen that a few times and it's really annoying.

Just a quick question because I'm a Steam Noob apparently. I ordered this game for both me and my brother (wouldn't make sense to buy the same game twice) but would this mean that when I'm playing he can't play and vica versa or does he have to make his own account and would he still be able to use my serial number or something like that? If the first is the case you can count on it that there is going to be war in this house.

I'd assume you have two computers, no? If so, you can simply install Steam on both, and then install New Vegas on both - and then put one of them into Offline mode. Easy!

As to consoles vs. Steam? Pfft. Enjoy your lack of mods, lower graphical quality, and the prevalent hardware failures present in this generation of consoles. :shifty:

Strangely enough this has, most of the times, nothing to do with the Steam servers themselves, but with a glitch in the local login service.

One game can only be registered for one account. A Steam client with your account information must be running in all computers you plan to play the game. Only one client can be in online mode (and you can have another client in offline mode :whisper:)

BTW, there's a Steam server maintenance tomorrow (starting 4 am pacific time), remeber to switch your clients to offline mode before going to sleep.

I'm sure people out there have had legitimate problems with Steam and everything, but I've been using the service as my primary means of purchasing PC games for quite some time now - and I don't think I've ever had any specifically Steam-related issues. Certainly nothing that stopped me from playing whenever I wanted.

This fear of steam reminds me of the fear of windows 95. For many years (heck I am sure there are still some today) people were scared/reluctant to move away from windows 3.1

There were people still claiming windows 3.1 was better years later with windows XP came out.

I am an old timer as well (gaming for 3 decades). Steam is the best thing since sliced bread, please do not be scared of it :)... Those who say otherwise are just like those people that think windows 3.1 is the bomb.

You can play during maintenance, even online. Only the community and matchmaking stuff in the background is offline.

This. I used to get very vexed at seeing that on numerous times when trying to play Empire: Total War. Another game they said could be played offline, but for some [censored] reason, if Steam was having problems it would happily inform me that I couldn't play my game just right now. Pitiful.

Another reason I'm not a Steam fan is the way it handles patches. Bought FEAR 2 on the cheap recently and had to install all the patches totalling well over 1.5GB before I could play it. Now I know there's an option to not keep the game updated, but this isn't available when doing the initial install. So I had to download all of this crap, the majority of which was multiplayer maps for a title that had ceased to have any online community!

I have reconciled myself to the fact that when I buy NV on day 1, I won't be able to play it that evening. Simply because Obsidian will probably choose to bung in a few last minute updates, and the Steam servers won't be able to cope. This was my experience with TW, and I expect the same nonsense again....
