Age of Ulfric Stormcloak?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 11:45 am

Well, that makes sense. Still, The book doesn't say WHEN in 173 the legions from Skyrim arrived (as I recall they arrived in174, but I might very well be wrong), or WHEN in 174 Imperial City was sacked, so there might very well been almost two years in between. But I'm no lore expert, and as I just begun the CW questline I guess there still might be things I haven't heard.

That's one of my primary gripes with a lot of the sources, the lack of more specific dates. Even something like "in the spring of" or "late in the year of" would be helpful for obsessives like me.

I can understand why they do it, the more specific they get the more potential problems they run into trying to making everything fit together properly, especially with people like me who pay attention to those things and will do the math and discover it to be off or impossible to reconcile with other known events. So they leave themselves a lot of leeway and that's understandable but still frustrating.

Like many others here I figure mid- to late-40s. He probably uses a mixture of Snowberries and Blisterwort to keep the grey under control.

With regard to facial expressions and behavior, I will say that Ulfric seems happiest when he's in combat. He laughs, he trash talks, he says he's having fun and asks if I'm having fun too. (Okay I know that's supposed to be more trash talk for his target but work with me here people!)

Yes! In fact, the Stormcloaks in battle, for me anyway, are just more fun to fight with. I'm the type that likes getting cool nicknames and hearing trash talk in battle. I have played characters that join the Imperials, and it works for those characters, but my pro-Stormcloak characters seem to be more fun overall.

On-topic, I'm glad someone brought this up because I've wondered this myself. Plus I enjoy any thread that helps me learn more lore and adds historical perspective, as I am a TES newbie.

I understand Nurelion offers a whole line of Just For Men products. Bothela does as well, but hers are brewed for more... uplifting purposes.

Yup, my feelings exactly. Altho I make no secret that my sympathies were with the SCs early on, I did try the Legion once just to see how it compared. I was bored silly. Even if I didn't agree with their goals, the primary characters on the SC side are decidedly NOT boring, are more interesting to be around, more appreciative of your service, and in the end it all just seems so much more... personal. It means something to them on a very personal level that you joined their cause. I suppose that's natural and intentional because people like Galmar and Ulfric especially would be far less likely to see you as just another grunt wanting to enlist, at some point they are thinking "holy crap we've got the Dragonborn on our side" and to them that actually *means* something.

As am I, Skyrim is my first TES game. I've since bought Morrowind and Oblivion but have yet to even install them. But I find the whole backstory and lore element fascinating, for me it's a lot like reading The Hobbit and LOTR for the first time, you're thrown into the midst of this dire conflict with all these different elements playing their part (willingly or otherwise) and there's millennia of history and legend leading up to it that you want to explore and understand better.

I don't suppose there's any way to find sound clips of Mr. Kulich saying things in other roles that might be appropriate and sticking them in the game... but then I guess you wouldn't have the proper facial animations to go along with them. :(
In Ironclad he barely talks, in 13th Warrior a little more but it's warriorly stuff, nothing gooey. I haven't seen his Buffy role but somehow I can't picture the Beast whispering sweet nothings, either.

It would make the imperial ending 100% more awesome if Ulfric would say "Lo, there do I see my father, lo, there do I see my mother, my sisters and my brothers. Lo, there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them in the halls of Sovngarde where the brave do live forever." *salute*

Thanks, I think someone on another forum already pointed me in that direction... is that the one that updates all the graphics so nicely? If so, it's already on my radar and I'll be getting it first thing once I get the game installed. That could be a while though. :)

Oh, he's a blast. Especially since UFO lets me "level him up" which updates all his skills to where they should be at his level, which will be my level as well if I've gotten to where he started or passed it by. He's a powerhouse, like a fully charged Argis only with a more joyful combat demeanor. I might have to take away the bows and arrows though, he's really enjoying what I gave him so much that I hardly ever see him in melee any more.

The other thing I've noticed is, IIRC UFO has it set up so that when you're on horseback, if you don't dismount, your followers don't dismount either. It kinda svcks if you get attacked from behind and they just keep riding and do nothing, but I expect it's to keep them from reacting to anything that you are trying to just sprint by because you can and don't want to be bothered with every slow low-level threat that comes along.

But that isn't working for Ulfric, who picks up most of the UFO stuff but apparently not all of it. It's annoying at times but it's kind of hilarious too because he simply CANNOT pass by a potential threat and let it go. I'll be galloping along with him right behind and all of a sudden I hear him say "What's that?" and start with the trash talk and I backtrack and his horse is just milling around by the side of the road and he's off the trail firing arrows at something and then he'll stop and say "That'll teach you to cross me" and I go look and it's one skeever lying dead in the underbrush.

Altho I was trying to sprint us quickly through Labyrinthian and he stopped and took out one of the trolls all by himself. Which was pretty cool.

I also have to be careful not to run in front of his shouts, I've gotten Fus Ro Dahed a couple times and he shouted Wuuthrad right out of my hands once in the Thalmor Embassy.

Followers tend to do that. Such agonies they endure over those wily slaughterfish.

Best part about Ulfric is having thu'um backup. It would be most awesome if they could make a mod where the dovahkiin could "teach" him a couple more low-level shouts.

P.S. Here's a http://sagenundlegenden.tumblr.com/post/18515018789 from Ironclad which is very Ulfric-like.

I played a heavy texture modded skyrim for bout 600 hours and when I installed the mod, I was very impressed. It takes a game that was made 10 years ago and puts the graphics on par with something that came out a year or so ago. But it does somethings even better than a modded skyrim with the water setup and the flora. Landscape is give and take better worse than skyrim. If u got the PC to max it out, go for it. Just word of advice, at beginning when u come out the door on the boat, just stand there and look around. Its [censored]i.ng gorgeous

Yeah, normally, but the point with the UFO mod is that when you are on horseback, and your followers are on horseback, they are not supposed to dismount unless you dismount and they can't engage in combat from horseback either. So if you decide to sprint away from that wily mudcrab or slow moving troll that is bellowing at you from a distance, they just sprint away right along with you even if the threat has already registered as hostile on your radar. If they are on foot, they will do what they normally do; if they are on horseback they may react verbally to a threat but they do not attack it unless you stop and dismount.

Ulfric ain't havin' none of that, lemme tell you. If something registers as a threat, he stops his horse and gets off and deals with it, even if he has to chase it to Oblivion and back. It is nice in that he still really does have my back even when we're riding, but not so great when I'm in a hurry and we could just sprint away from something that is still far away enough and slow enough to not require killing at just that moment.

Edit: of course we're talking about a guy who once went way out of his way and waded across a river just to kill a mudcrab on the other side that I couldn't even SEE and which appeared to be doing nothing except minding its own business. So I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Perhaps *he* is programmed to attack any potentially hostile creature on sight, whether it attacks him and his allies or not.

Oh I'm sure it could be modded in, none of his shouts are voiced anyway. It would just be another thunderclap for a sound effect. You can use the console to add and remove the knowledge of spells from NPCs, and I'm pretty sure you can do the same for yourself with shouts, I don't see why you couldn't give Ulfric additional shouts and just use the same sound effect. Altho realistically it took him almost 10 years to learn the two he already knows, so...
