Alchemy 100 in 10 minutes

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:05 am

As it seems everyone finds leveling alchemy very tedious, I was reluctant to do it, after I spent 3 hours on leveling enchanting to 100, but I have to say if you do it in this order and prepare yourself its a matter of minutes.
The caveeat to that 10 minutes claim is, that you cant do it in the beginning, because you wont be properly prepared. And having the correct ingredients is the key. So after you got enchanting to 100, you very likely have banish, which means, you can make a very quick and easy profit on your enchants without leaving whiterun. (just make iron daggers with mats bought from the warmaiden, then buy filled soulgems up to common from the jarls mage, enchant with banish and paralyse/absorb health, sell, repeat)

Now, for that list of alchemy ingredients. The most important thing to look for everywhere is a giants toe, since it seems to put a serious spike into potion values. The more you have, the better. Whenever they refresh, plow through the giants camps, buy it from vendors, or steal it in the archmages quarters in the winterhod college, which is a great place for ingredients btw.
The reason for this is, in case someone didnt know, for alchemy leveling the value of the potion you create is the most important aspect. At alchemy level 50 a pot with Creep Cluster, Giants Toe and Wheat gives you a full skill level, and I still havent seen a more valuable potion.

There is a website, which lists the combinations of ingredients and their values. The value itself on this website is irrelevant, its about the proportion. Pick the most valuable from these lists (best value there is from 550-720) and buy the ingredients.
As a reference. At alchemly level 50 with the affordable perks and alchemy gear the potion I made was worth about 3000 (a third for selling)
http://www.endoftheweb.se/skyrim/index.php

But you dont have to go there, because I already did the work for you to break down a list of most valuable potions and the ingredients you need to look out for:

Sorry, if the formatting is a bit off.

Now, the only unexplainable things is, you find the potion with Giants Toe, Creep Cluster and Wheat, which I was talking about at the end of the list on this website, but there might be a bug, because this is the most valuable. You start out making this one and work your way down the list.

Now the preparation.

1. Choose the thief guardian stone for 20% faster leveling in alchemy. Go to your home and sleep for a 10% rested bonus (15 if married), or in an inn, if you dont own a house. This will speed up the process noticably.

2. Make alchemy gear. If you have 100 enchanting, you can drink a store bought potion to increase enchanting 25%. With that you can make 4 items to increase you alchemy skill 27% each for a total of 108%.

3. perks
I would expect, if you want to max your alchemy, you probably want to use the neccessary perks, which are 5x Alchemist, 1x Physician, 1x Benefactor. Of course you wont be able to pick up all of them as you are just starting to level alchemy. BUT make sure that whenever you reach the needed skill level, you stop making potions, pick up that perk and then go back to make potions, because they will be worth more and you will advance faster.

4. If you have the money, use it to train the 5 skill levels at each global level in arcadias. You'll get your money back in no time. When I was done with the 10 minutes I had pots worth more then 150k store selling value.

Thats pretty much it. Make sure you have the leveling bonuses, wear the gear, buy 5 skill levels every time you can, and make a pause everytime you can put another perk into alchemy.

I was level 50 alch when I started this just by playing around with some ingredients at some point earlier in the game, but if you are much lower, the levels will jump even faster.
At level 50, the giants toe potion gave me over a level each, but sadly I had only accumulated 15 giants toes, so at about level 65 I worked my way down the list with the values decreasing.
To give you an idea, in total I probably had to make less then 100 potions to get to 100, and since you often make 10-15 potions with the same ingredients you can imagine that it was rather quick.

So, sorry, its not really 10 minutes to get you to 100 if you just started the game, but on the other hand I wouldnt advise you to do that anyway. Start doing this when you are around 30, it will take you up 5 or 6 total levels and by that time you will have the needed ingredients to make this easy going.

Hope it helps.

I hope it helped.
For reference: the combination of Chaurus Egg - Hanging Moss - Blue Mountain Flower
would have a value of 457 in comparison to the combinations listed above. So its still usable, but there are a bunch of better options to use the ingredients.

Awesome tutorial, thanks! I was just about to level up my alchemy to get the enchanting/smithing enhancing potions. Question - apart from 100 in skill, I only need Alchemist 5/5 and Benefactor, right (apart from the enchanted gear of course)?

I'm off to the vulcanic area. Not only is it filled with creep clusters and bears, there are also two giant camps there. But I'm pretty sad to now know that I need giant toes to level up most efficiantly! I always feel bad about slaughtering giants! They're just minding their own business, chilling with their mammoths! Damnit...

You will need the Physician perk to open the way to Benefactor, so its a total of 7 in alchemy.
About the giants, true. But its just so helpful ;)
You can always keep refreshing the shop vendor inventories, but its probably not as fruitful as jumping from giant camp to camp and get 2 toes each.

Value is going to depend on certain factors, even raising your alchemy level raises potion prices.

Most expensive ones I have found are...

Creep cluster,Scaly Pholotia,Mora Tapinella 993 (my price)
Bear Claw, hanging moss, saber cat eye 967
Ice Wraith teeth, vamp dust, garlic 942

By comparison my hanging moss, glow dust, glow mushroon is 895.So quite a bit higher than yours, but the ones I posted above should scale up in price.

Yes, I noticed that some of the values on the website are slightly off, but the difference is negligible when leveling, as all of them are very expensive. It probably also depends on the perks you already have, as physician boosts some lower value potions, which then have a higher value until you can pick up benefactor.

Nontheless, the potion with Giants Toe, Creep Cluster, Wheat is yet unmatched in value, so everyone should work down from there.

I've had good luck using Giants Toe. Also there are a couple of decent formulas on the Skyrim Alchemy wiki with fairly common ingredients that work well. I would also recommend that before you start trying to level Alchemy [if you haven't done much with it] is to enchant a suite of Fortify Alchemy Gear as best as you can. Equip your new fortify alchemy gear and then make the most expensive potions you can. To make your gear you may want to buy a +25% Fortify Enchant potion from a vendor first before you do your enchanting as that buff helps a lot.

Note: I did the above cheese last night because I was bored. Of course I broke the game at the difficulty level I was playing at so I recommend folks just roleplay their character otherwise you'll probably hurt your enjoyment [duh].

Yeah i remade some stuff at 100 and a higher level of speech and what not. The giant toe one is 2014 for me right now, the one I listed that was 967 is now 1456.

Basically teh ones that give multiples effects for the least amount of ingredients, and of course high end type side effects. Not sure why carry wieght and fortify health ar so big, but i guess its more the damage stamina regen that raises the price.

Does this still work (quick skill-ups) if I am NOT planning to take the alchemy perks, and I simply want the skill points for character levels?

it still works just the same and there is no reason to believe it will change as it is no bug. its just the most efficient way of leveling. and sure, you can do the same without perks, it will just be proportionally slower but probably still ok.

Lol, this would have been nice to know when I was leveling alchemy. I finally gave up after it was taking 10-15 potions a skillup. I just used the console and added ingredients to make potions. Even then (making the most expensive potion I knew of) it took 800 potions for me to go from 60-100 (roughly).

Thanks for the info. Bookmarked for my next character because I hate using the console :sadvaultboy:

Nice information! Thanks to the OP!

For me the easiest potion to use for leveling and $$$$$ was Deathbell + Red Mountain Flower + Salt. The ingredients are easy enough to just go out and gather and may be found in most shops at very very cheap prices. I would also recommend that anyone wanting to do this get the "Merchant" perk in speechcraft (can sell anything to any vendor). This way you will be able to use your potions to buy weapons, smithing equipment or even training. Just Buy what you need and then unload your potions on the vendor/trainer to get all of your gold back!

I ended up getting Faralda in the mages college to train my Destruction from lvl 55 to lvl 90 and made about 5k gold out of the deal!

What merchant has enough gold to purchase these expensive potions? So far, the richest merchant I have found is the Blacksmith in Riften and he only has around 1100 gold to barter with. Do I need to take the perks in speechcraft to be able to invest?

If you invest, the Riverwood trader has 10000 gold. For me that was well worth the 4 perks. If you dont even invest 3 perks into speech to be able to sell the potions to everyone, you are rather limited. Best option then would be to restore the thieves guild, which will make them have 4000 each. 3 people as far as I know.
