Alchemy made me rerole my character. When I realized by tough Nord was going to have to run through the fields picking flowers and chasing butterflies, I rolled a female Elf. Now my character fits.

Alchemy is a pain in the beginning to level but seriously easy to use once you get all the ingredients and their effects figured out. Then its like 3 clicks to make any potion you have discovered and very powerful to use with any skill outside of magic.

Don't forget, if you eat an ingredient, you get XP and you learn at least one effect.
Eating an ingredient might not be the safest thing to do though.

It's annoying hard to level, compared to the other two crafting skills.

It's very useful and profitable. Self made health potions have saved my bacon more times that I can count, and I sell the potions I can't use. Of course it means my Nord barbarian skips through the fields picking daises, but I guess he's in touch with his feminine side

It's annoying to break into alchemy. Discovery is expensive, time consuming, and fairly boring. Discovering the more exotic effects is REALLY expensive.

Later on in the game when you can actually afford to just buy out every ingredient vendor on the map, it's pretty badass.

It's a pain to level, and all the ingredients and potions will weigh you down big time.

You make a funny sound when you taste an ingredient to see what it does and it turns out to be poisonous. :D

Added: When you're fighting a dragon or anything else and you need to heal quickly, if you have Healing Potions hotkeyed, a lot of them, you'll make it through the battle a lot easier. It takes time you don't have to charge a Healing spell and fire it.

I don't think it's anywhere near as much fun as it was in Morrowind, but (just like magic) they somehow decided to remove any possibility of failure. Kinda gets rid of the whole "learn by practicing" thing, but I guess maybe people found it too frustrating.

It's not too fun to level, although I spent like 100,000 gold on training. It's a pretty beastly skill though. Some good potions that I can make are:

Restore health: 120 points
Poison damage: 50+ points
Resist [element] 70%
Fortify [skill] 94%

I'm comfortable enough in my masculinity to pick flowers and catch butterflies, skipping gayly (Yeah, I'm using it right!) and whistling a merry tune, battleaxe in had.
