Alchemy Breaking The Game

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 10:51 am

In Skyrim there is a serious flaw within Alchemy that I feel needs to be addressed. You can layer alchemical effects over eachother and create equipment based on those values through enchanting and smithing. You can then repeat those same steps to create equipment which will eventually break the game's scaling entirely and leave you all but invincible. This is one of those things I think people shouldn't be able to do through the normal course of the game. If you want to cheat for your own entertainment, go ahead. (preferably in the console) However, I believe the developer construed max values for enchanting and alchemy should be adhered to. As it is, you can create equipment and weapons capable of negating nearly all magical and elemental damage, along with giving yourself ridiculously high armor and damage values. Is there anyone else that thinks this should be addressed or are we all content to one-shot dragons and give up any sense of scope whatsoever? Because I think the alchemy skill and its augmentations were meant to have upper limits and as of now, now they're not really there.

Bethesda haven't released a fix for this horrendous game-breaking bug yet, but luckily I've discovered a simple workaround:

Exercise self-control and limit your alchemical effects to what you feel is reasonable. It is annoying knowing that the option is there and made my game nigh-unplayable for hours, but then I discovered that I don't have to abuse alchemy in that manner if I don't want to

The secondary part of this bug - where others will post on the forums about alchemy abuse - is harder to work around, so for now you'll probably just have to try and ignore them (but I imagine that if you use Firefox, greasemonkey could be used to hide all mention of it - don't know for sure though).

I agree that it's really just a matter of not using exploits yourself. I think i just feel a little annoyed with it since I've been playing these games forever and balance is usually maintained via bugfix patches and if you really wanted to cheat they'd oblige you by way of the console commands. Ultimately you guys are definitely correct though in just ignoring it and playing to your own standards. I guess it just pissed me off a little how many people don't care about ruining the game. Anyone else want to opine on this one?

Agreed with OP. Game needs a lot of balancing for some skills.
Smithing + Dual wielding is another ridiculously overpowered combination.

Step 1: Get 90 blacksmithing ( by spamming iron daggers and hide helmets, lame! )
Step 2: Get 2 Daedric swords ( Legendary )
Step 3: Confirm that you have all dual-wielding perks
Step 4: Kill Alduin with 2 - 5 LMB+RMB attacks depending on difficulty.

I did the above on my first play-through without knowing that it would be so overpowered. I was so disappointed that I could kill Alduin in roughly 5 seconds....

This isn't a flame or attack it's just my opinion, just as yours is yours.

This doesn't seem to me a "bug" but rather simple over abuse of a flexible system. I'd much rather have maximum flexibility in creating stuff where the only issue is not letting yourself keep doing it until you are a demi-god, unless that is what you want. In both cases, both can be achieved. Why should one persons lack of willpower affect other folks enjoyment?

Should they prevent the command console too? You can create an object with a permanent Dremora Lord Pet so each time you equip it it pops into existence and stays until killed or you take off the object. Should you be prevented from doing this because someone else can't stop themselves from doing it?

The series has always had as a core element the ability to do some incredibly interesting things. It would piss plenty of us off if flexibility were removed for everyone just because someone else lacks the mental fortitude to limit what they do or don't do in their own game.

so you can make a potion for 50% better potions, you make another potion and you get 75% better potions, and you just keep climbing?

So then don't do it.

I just realized something here. I think my own OCD makes this more frustrating for me. I'm so into maxing a character, but so against "cheating" or using exploits to get there, that it drives me nuts knowing there's a standard set of max enchantments but that if you throw one more cog into the machine it tilts all the values. Damned otherwise useless alchemy! I personally will probably implement a capping mod at some point down the road, but I definitely hear everybody on not limiting peoples' mischievous sides. I know the removal of Acrobatics and Athletics did quite a bit to enrage me too. /Sigh
