Many thanks for doing this, that's a lot of info you've compiled!

I'm on PC so have to wait a bit for Hearthfire, and I'm unsure of whether I'll be using it with this current character or starting a new character for it - but whichever turns out to be the case it really helps to know what vanilla smithing items I might want to stockpile (rather than crafting stuff to sell, or selling the materials!)

I assume nails are crafted from iron? Are hinges and locks craftable and if so which metals do they require?

Cheers!

Thanks a bunch! This helps a lot! Can you believe that each house requires a forest's worth of wood and several mines worth of iron? Madness!

Everything is iron! Which is great! Well, locks require corundum and iron but still. Iron is now Skyrim's grey gold. My advice? Start stockpiling iron now. Like every freaking ingot and ore you can beg, borrow, steal, mine, and shed blood for.

Just remember, 10 nails is 1 iron, 2 hinges is 1, 1 fitting is 1, 1 lock is 1 :)

Cheers, this is all great info! Thanks for taking the time to let gamers on different platforms know what they need to stock up on in advance of the DLC release - it's appreciated!

And I am now buying/mining iron as if there's no tomorrow :D

You should add that to the document. Not everyone scrolls down expecting more info.

With that being said, the info is well appreciated, thanks. I didn't anticipate the house building to be as in depth. For example, I had no idea how many materials I would need.

@BorynHawkeAuditore
Sorry for coughing up an old thread, but Hearthfire has just been released for PC, and I need an overview of how many ingots and other stuff is necessary. I can't seem to be able to access your spreadsheet on Google Calendar. Is it still there?

And another thing: You don't really need that many Iron Ingots for the main structure (excluding the wings) and the misc exterior (like Animal pen, Smelter and so on) in Lakeview Manor.

If you build the main structure successively, ending with the cellar (and not including any wings) and then build the misc exterior, you actually – believe it or not – only need 28 Iron Ingots! Just don't make more nails than you need for the item currently being built, and you will save a few ingots on that alone. Because not all items use 10 nails, so a few are often left over from an ingot.

Starting a new character makes it MUCH more fun. If you walk into the DLC with 50k coins, you'll probably feel really gyped out of your money.
