All-Nighters

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 9:35 am

I'm an architect student. Let me tell you, we live up to the stereotype of never sleeping.

This past week was especially busy, being before midterm reviews. My friends and I pulled four full nights. And the nights we do actually get sleep, it's usually not very long (three or four hours most times).

It certainly takes its toll though. We're thin and pale and have bags under our eyes like you wouldn't believe.

Thank you Spring break. Thank you.

Edit: let me add to this by saying that even though that must sound like we all just procrastinate like hell and don't get our work done, that's not it. We work all day, too. There's just not enough time.

Is it worth it? A friend of mine whose an architect student in her third year says the exact same thing. It's always sleepovers, studying, assignments and all nighters with her.

I hope you guys get paid a [censored] load of money.

I used to stay up all night a lot, but not for studying. I can't really do that anymore without getting tired though.

i hate sleep in general.

the longest i went without sleep was when i had a fever and was hallucinating, 3 days went past in a flash until my fever broke and passed out. when i woke up i realized 3 days were gone.

Never done an all-nighter for school. I'm tired as is in the morning and fall asleep in class at least once a week. If I pulled an all nighter I'd probably do a face plant in the middle of the hallway and just sleep right there.

I have done all nighters at friends houses before though, and the next night I'd fall asleep at like 6pm.

I've only done so once - freshman year of highschool, I was (wrongly) nervous about midterms. I chanted every date in all the lessons we'd learned in history class until I could recite them all. What a waste.
From my experience, midterms are usually easier than the regular tests in class.

But I never study, I can't brainstorm information off the top of my head, but if I'm asked a question about a specific topic it all comes flooding back.

Just out of curiosity, did or do any of you routinely pull all-nighters for school purposes? I realize it's not even close to the best way to study, but I've learned to accept the fact that I will never be able to study well in advance.
I did for school once in a while...during brief moments where I felt like trying to be a better student, haha.
I did it more often out of wanting to "play" more vs work/chores, so I'd give up sleep. Once 24-26 hours awake was nothing, but now...not so much. I feel it a lot. Which svcks since I still have insomnia fairly frequently. :)

Oh yes.

Writing papers at 5 AM in my dorm room while singing Space Oddity incoherently.

I'm glad I'm done with those days now that I'm in grad school.

I've never pulled all-nighters, but I've written coursework on the bus to school, and achieved moderately well (all Bs)

The longest time I've went without sleep is 4 days. I was prescribed Adderall for ADD in 9th grade. I took too many and I was hyped. I finished all my homework I didn't do for a week in about 10 hours then I played videogames and read for the next 3 days.

I'm in my early 20's and regularly stay up all night for the heck of it. I'm semi-unemployed so I don't really have anything that I need to wake up for, and my roommate shares the same habit as I do, so we just end up playing games without any attention to the time.

I spent a more than a few sleepless nights getting my assignments done in time, but for exams? Never. I'm a firm believer in a good night's sleep being infinitely better for your performance than last-minute revision. You wouldn't practice for a marathon by running around town the night before, do you?

I had to meet an art director a month ago and come up with some ideas for an advertising campaign I was working on. I drank about 2 liters of coffee and stayed up the whole night trying to come up with the big idea. I was so wired, I decided to have chicken for breakfast.

Anyways, when I got on the train to meet up with him I ended up fainting. All of that work was a complete waste of time. All my ideas were crap too.

When you're tired, you don't function as well as when you've been well rested -- its a no brainer. So its something I probably won't let happen again.

Did it a couple times in college/university before a particularly daunting final exam or two. Absolutely miserable. I learned to budget my time a little better after that and would usually only stay up until about 2am at the latest studying. That was bad enough. God, I'm glad that's behind me.

TC, I pull at LEAST one (sometimes two) all-nighters a week. Almost always because of school/class.

You're not alone.
