All save files corrupt

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 5:50 pm

Hello I just got back from a 7 days break to realise that all my save files are corrupt. The newest savefiles that are just quick saves doesn't say they're corrupted but instead that ''the save relies on content that no longer exists''. When I start up the loading screen works fine and i get in to the world... for about 1 second, then it crashes. I have quite a lot of saves and mods so i tried removing my mods and some saves, but nothing works. Just as a note, I can start up a new game just fine.
Anyone knows a fix? I really dont want to remake 60 hours of gameplay...

This. Also if you've changed ugridstoload in the ini, then reverted to a different setting, this can also corrupt your saves.

Well the mods worked great before and i had no problems, i only use mod manager and haven't changed any ini files. Has there been some sort of recent patch?

For your saves, many files with .bak extension (or other, i haven't got backup files because i have turn off the auto-save) are created in the saves directory. If all your saves are corrupted, you can test these .bak after delete the .bak in the files names.

In all cases, after a new game, do not modify the ini files ! The best behavior about the ini files is to keep both of them (SkyrimPrefs.ini and Skyrim.ini) for each new game and transfert its in your game folder when you playing.

A mod can slowly corrupt your game, this happend a lot in the past in World of Warcraft.

You apparently removed a mod, hence the warning that content is not available. It would seem that that particular mod is the culprit, as it made your game dependent upon the mod, making any attempt to load the save without it result in a crash. Your only course of action is to identify the mod and contact the mod author. This is the risk you take when using third party mods, particularly those that have been released before the Creation Kit is available.

Always test mods and make "safe" saves that are free of mods so you have something to revert to if you run into problems. Proper mod development should take this into account. In this case, you likely used a mod that the author never tested in this manner.
