I once had my card cloned, and didn't notice until some one spent around £1000 on a television. I immediately turned into http://www.videoplugger.info/uploaded_images/hulk2-786086.JPG and phoned my bank, who insisted that I bought the Television from a Curry's store in Hemel Hempsted, which is near london. Not only was I not in the vicinity of london at the time, I actually had proof that I was at university in Birmingham, a good while away from london. The bank told me I had to take it up with Currys, who fortunately managed to give me a full refund after a few months.
It was eventually linked to a petrol station near my campus that had a reputation (although I didn't know it at the time) for cloning peoples cards. They got closed down quite promptly, turns out it had happened to alot of people I knew from the area who used that petrol station. Needless to say, I rarely use my card to pay for anything since then.
I found out about a year later that I was still paying insurance on that television, I thought the direct debit was the insurance for my laptop.
The really upsetting thing is that, the money that was spent was the final part of my student loan, which I was using to pay for rent at halls/travel costs and equipment for class. Since I couldn't pay the rent I made my excuses and managed to cling on long enough until I found out I wouldn't be getting the money back for sometime and had to drop out due to lack of housing. My course tutor was nice enough to defer my grades to the next year if i wanted to go back but I never did get enough money together to go back after paying the owed rent and debts built up in that time period.
It really put me off Birmingham.
