So, i almost lost a chunk of money today...

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 8:31 pm

Today, Someone managed to get a hold of my apple ID and buy 40 dollars worth of items with the money i got for Christmas. I immediately changed my password, deleted my cookies, and downloaded a free trial of trend micro to check for spyware. I went through the customer support hotline through Apple's exclusively outsourced customer support. I finally got my money back and was http://www.hongfire.com/cg/data/25/caramelldansen.swf.
This made me want to ask: has this happened to you or something similar, and was any legal action taken as far as you know? I would love to hear your stories.

I just hope Apple is smart enough to track them down by using a GeoIP database and some fancy tracking.

Stole this guy's Apple ID and started spending his Christmas money on items.

I read the title, and I thought to myself, "bet it has something to do with apple" and it did. :)

oooayyoooahhh *closes tab* >.> I'm watching you.

And no, not yet. I've been lucky with stuff like that. Worst thing that's happened was my credit card company went "Yeah, you don't ever go there, so we denied the transaction."

I've had someone steal my credit card information a few years back. Got it changed, that was that.

And I personally can't ever get enough of that link. It'll probably still be playing in a few hours... ^.^

Is it that link? To click or not to click, he wondered.

This has never happened to me. I hope it never does. Identity theft is one of those discomfiting things you never want to have to experience yourself.

Well I had my debit card compromised twice in the past year or so and had to get it replaced.

Nothing was taken (not that I had much to take  )

I've had my credit card information stolen twice (one to pay for a flight back to Nigeria...), never figured out where my details were leaked from though. There are a few online companies where my registration email has started getting spammed so I guess they're not unlikely sources, whether they employed the miscreant or were just careless.

Got refunded by the bank both times but neither they nor the police could've been less interested in following it up. No wonder credit card fraud is so rife if nobody does anything about it...

I left my bankcard on the bus once, chased and caught it, nobody owned up to taking it, I cancelled my card as soon as I stepped of the bus.
Lost nothing that time.

Everytime I get my paycheck someone takes £100+ of my overall pay, I find this theft rather [censored] since it's "legal"

I've honestly never had a problem with it. Only thing was that I was being charged for PPI on my credit card when I declined it. They got their hands slapped for that one.

Yeah because telling a story about how he almost lost money gets so many people rattled.

I once had my card cloned, and didn't notice until some one spent around £1000 on a television. I immediately turned into http://www.videoplugger.info/uploaded_images/hulk2-786086.JPG and phoned my bank, who insisted that I bought the Television from a Curry's store in Hemel Hempsted, which is near london. Not only was I not in the vicinity of london at the time, I actually had proof that I was at university in Birmingham, a good while away from london. The bank told me I had to take it up with Currys, who fortunately managed to give me a full refund after a few months.

It was eventually linked to a petrol station near my campus that had a reputation (although I didn't know it at the time) for cloning peoples cards. They got closed down quite promptly, turns out it had happened to alot of people I knew from the area who used that petrol station. Needless to say, I rarely use my card to pay for anything since then.

I found out about a year later that I was still paying insurance on that television, I thought the direct debit was the insurance for my laptop.

The really upsetting thing is that, the money that was spent was the final part of my student loan, which I was using to pay for rent at halls/travel costs and equipment for class. Since I couldn't pay the rent I made my excuses and managed to cling on long enough until I found out I wouldn't be getting the money back for sometime and had to drop out due to lack of housing. My course tutor was nice enough to defer my grades to the next year if i wanted to go back but I never did get enough money together to go back after paying the owed rent and debts built up in that time period.

It really put me off Birmingham.

Someone got my debit card number once. Found about $100 charged at the Playstation online store, I don't even own a PS. Talked to my bank, got a new card and money back.

A Chinese farmer got my WoW account once. This was when the new battlenet stuff came out so friends could see you online with any toon. I also wasn't playing much at the time. I didn't notice until a friend texts me saying he sees me on some different toon. Except I was at work. Got my account and all my stuff back that night.

Me? Well, I've had my bank call me multiple times because I was stealing my own debit card. :D

I did have my WoW account and Gmail account compromised but nothing bad came of it. At least nothing apparent (besides being banned in WoW which was taken care of).

Maybe it's the years I've spent on this forum, but I now always read the URL of any link before I click... And if it says "carameldansen" I know to avoid.

It's a year I was glad I could leave behind. I've found a night course which awards the same degree at a better university that's local to me, so I can sustain myself with a fulltime job while finishing my course. Great thing is I'll be a year ahead since I still get my grades from my last course :D Just need to wait until next year to apply -.-
