Alternative ways to get the day 1 patch?

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 8:44 pm

I have a usb internet modem card for my internet connection on my pc. Ive looked into whether this was compatible with my ps3 and xbox and was told by verizon that it is not, would be too slow for it, and would eat up my 5gb monthly allowance before the end of the billing cycle. So im wondering if there is anyway to get the patch through my pc and put it on my PS3. Ive attempted patching games through a usb flash drive before and it did not work probably because I did somthing wrong. I have updated my PS3 through a flash drive before im not sure if this includes all game patchs released or not,but I do not believe so if my memory is correct. If it is not possible I also wonder if I will be able to complete the main quest and the majority of the side quests without the patch or if I will need to get the patch? Any information would be appreciated.

The only way I can think of, if there is no possible way you can connect it at home, is to take your system to a friends house or somewhere where you can hook it up to the internet to patch. As you said a flash drive will not work.

Haven't seen official patch notes so no idea what it fixes. However if it was anything game breaking the game would not have likely passed certification, so I don't think it would be the end of the world playing without it.

I wouldn't expect a simple day one/code patch to be THAT big considering I wouldn't expect them to add any graphics stuff or DLC content instantly. Just hook it up (if possible), I wouldn't expect it to take more than 100 MB (possibly even less).

You could always wait, and buy the GOTY edition of Skyrim, which will be fully patched.

If you have a network card in your PC (or a onboard network card on your mainboard), you could connect your PS3 with the PC and share the Internet-Connection.
This way the PS3 could download the patch.

Actually, on consoles at least, it's usually way less. All of Oblivion and Fallout 3's patches on 360 were about 4 megs each, same with most games. I've never seen a patch on a console over 10mb.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, and on PS3 they're bigger.

No you're right. But that's because apparently Microsoft has a limit how big patches are allowed to be which is kind of a interesting decision.

The patch for Skyim on the PS3 is 58MB

Just out of curiosity, how do you know the size when the patch isn't even available? Could you give a source (unless it's from illegal means)?

Some already have the game (legally bought) and apparently there is already a patch do download. Read it in another forum.
But I think it's still against the rules of this forum to link to sources before the official release. I don't want a warning :)

Day 1 patch for PS3 is 58MB, and 3MB for 360. You will be fine.

yeah. I'm not going to get into the technical details of it - you're going to have to figure out how to do this on your own. get a tech savvy buddy to help and it'll go quick. but basically,

you're going to connect to the internet on your PC via the USB dongle

then you're going to share internet out from your PC, using the network card and an ethernet cable, and just shove the other end of that ethernet cable into your ps3.

(ps3 has wireless, so u can also share internet wirelessly if you ahve a wireless card, most all laptops do)

then update.

the only roadblock i can see is if your ps3 needs a crapton of other PLAYSTATION related updates before it lets you download the skyrim update. I have no prediction on how much that will be.

But your limit of 5GB is around 5,000mb, and the patch is under 60mb , so you should be fine

Unfortunately I cant share the internet connection with any other devices through my pc. I might just see if geek squad will update it for me at best buy. Thank you for the info though everyone.
