I always cheat, and buy the house in Whiterun.

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 3:38 am

I honestly don't see the point of cheating, or using exploits and glitches. Just takes the fun out of it for me. And still I have enough money to tell Tullius "Here's 500,000 septims. War's over, go home." Really, money is so easy to come by, one the Skyrim's DLC should be a Scrooge McDuck style Money Bin.

But the great thing about single player games like this is you can play however you want. So play how you want and have fun!

But it DOES enchance the game :)

I wouldn't do it if it weren't fun :)

Making gold is super easy...and I still don't want to spend any of it, at level 3, on buying the house and decorating it...and I don't have to...I can cheat and just have the house I wanted, so I can go on to the fun stuff I want to do.

I don't ruin my own fun :)

You don't have to justify it to me. What's fun for me may not be fun for you, and vice versa. But like I said, we all get to play our own way.

I like having a house early but I'm currently playing two characters who I don't want to have to deal with dragons (yet), so no house in Whiterun. :(
One just bought the house in Riften after being homeless for 20 levels or so. With the other I've done all the quests necessary to buy the house in Markath, but I guess I haven't met the level requirement yet to be offered it. Which svcks

I wish the game gave you the option to buy a shack or something in Riverwood at the start of the game. Just a place to hang my head and store my stuff until I can afford or qualify for something better.

You can avoid the dragon quests and still get habitats in the game. I used Valtheim towers on my first character for a very long time. It's a little east of Whiterun, and you end up clearing it out on the Companions storyline, but you can just as easily go there and clear it out yourself. For about 25lvls of game play I had it as my 'home' without loosing any gear at all. It's a bit of a walk, even after fast travel, but if you are into the game play it's just about the most secure location you could have a 'home' in, and the view doesn't svck.

Also, as an early alternative option to the main quest line, you can head to riften and join up with the thieves guild, where you get a bed and storage chests which don't reset. Those can be used throughout the game, and are essentially "free".

It's weird for me because I see people talking about the bugs and lag and freezing, but I've not come across much of that. At the same time, I see people talking about how easy it is to get money in Skyrim and I've just not experienced that. While I've not had a lack of money, I've had to hustle my ace off to get what I've had. The way some talk, septims fall from trees. :)

At low levels money may be scarce - or if you have a playstyle that doesn't quest or loot much. I can agree that consoling in say 7K gold right at the start of your game will take pressure away from running back and forth simply selling stuff, so you can just get stuck into story stuff, but right at the start of your game is probably the only time you'd ever need to do this. Another thing that makes money feel scarce when you're a low level and plentiful when you're a high level is that most money rewards for completing quests are leveled.

The only time in Skyrim, or even Oblivion, that I've found gold to be difficult to come by is when I spend it all to level Enchanting/Smithing/Alchemy. When you just sell all your stuff and only buy buy buy, then yeah, it's tough. But after I maxed all those out, the gold flows like water from a faucet again.

I wonder if it's also tough for "pure" mage characters, though, since they spend literally no points in stamina so they can't make a good haul from dungeon to dungeon unless they bring a pack mule along or are extremely picky with their treasure.

I always cheat, and buy the house in Whiterun.
For me, it greatly enhances the game to have a base of operations, where I can store items, and sleep.

Anyone else do this?

Erm, no.
All my characters first head for the Alchemist's Shack.
Doing so allows for a safe storage base of operations without the sometimes-hassle of releasing the dragons.
The end table is safe for storage, the bed is yours as you please, it has an alchemy station and it's free.
Not one quest need be started to have your own bed and storage container. It can be yours 10-12 minutes after exiting Helgen.
The nearby Imperial Camp and Ivarstead have your other crafting stations.
Simple, safe and free.

Just one person's preference for a starter home without the need to cheat.
Your mileage may vary.

It's pretty easy to come up with 7000 coins, even early in the game. I usually just sleep in the Inns until I decide where I want to buy a house.

Thanks, I didn't know the alchemist shack had safe storage.
I may use that as a home for my next character

The money for the house is'nt hard to get.

Just save and sell stuff, and you can have 5000 by the time you get to whiterun, sometimes.

I created a bare-bones test character to check out things I've modded. I used the batch file method that makes him a member of the bandits ally faction and places him at the Guardian Stones. If you aren't doing any crafting, you can live a truly minimalist life in Skyrim. He sleeps in a hunter's bedroll, doesn't really need any containers, and when in town he avoids conversation and especially guards. I'm surprised by all the entertainment in the area around Lake Ilinalta.

I agree that having a house right off the bat is a must but I don't cheat and I don't ever start the main quest on my new characters. Instead, I pick up the wood elf companion in Riverwood and use him as a mule up until I can get the house in Riften.

I've been on a major loot-and-sell kick the last few play sessions and I'm finally up to my largest amount of gold at one time: 49k

Almost halfway to the trophy!

Update: I got up to like 51k... but then went ahead and bought Proudspire Manor so that I could move toward becoming Thane of Solitude (a task at which I was successful). Jebus that place is EXPENSIVE! 25,000 gold (plus money for decor and an enchanting table)!!! At least it had some money laying around along with some potions and other things I could sell (whilst wearing my Necklace of Peerless Haggling and the Masque of Clavicus Vile) to recoup a little bit of my investment.

I'm already back up to something like 32k gold. I'll get that 100k trophy yet! :bunny:

You can be fairly minimalist even if you are crafting, just make sure to use what you find as soon as possible. Raw ore and uncured hides can be an issue here, but almost every mine has a smelter and there are tanning racks all over the place. Alternatively, just trade the stuff in for ingots or leather if you need to free up some space.

My current character will be buying Hjerim, so will have plenty of storage, but I do have a couple planned that will not have a base and just keep traveling.

I take everything back. After awhile, septims DO grow on trees. :)

first, there's no reason to have gold - there's nothing to buy and nothing to gain except 1 house that's quest related - free houses are much easier to access and will not have random people moving in.
there is your best gear which you make. no reason to pick up other gear, keep potions, keep ingredients, buy gear, or invest in stores.

neither objective makes any sense. i want to store garbage. in order to buy storage for my garbage, i need to pay money, which i'll earn by SELLING THE GARBAGE I WANTED TO STORE. problem is, it's GARBAGE and not worth money. . . or storing, but that's beside the point. you don't need a house to store anything because the world is only filled with garbage. and then someone is cheating to pay for garbage storage?!

I've bought all the houses just from looting and selling and creating and selling. There's is not need to use console commands for money in this game, though I do agree that Breezehome is a good base of operations. I keep all my crap there too, and at Proudspire Manor.

Yes, but no matter how much money you have, you'll never be able to buy a bathroom addition for any of your houses. Come on Beth, how about a Bob Villa mod?
