Amazing Marketing

Beth, you nailed it. The Dishonored marketing was brilliant. Got a lot of people introduced to the game who knew nothing about it because millions of people were anticipating Skyrim DLC. Simply brilliant. Thank you Pete, you're a genius. Thank you Beth.

I coulda told you that picture they released wasn't from Skyrim. I see nothing brilliant in their marketing.

The Main Event, likes to agree with the unpopular opinion... he likes starting stuff. But there was many things from the photo that could have been linked to Skyrim. The had a lot of major news sites covering that possible DLC for Skyrim was on the way because of that picture, meaning everyone was checking it out. It was nothing more than hyping the possibility of DLC to bring attention to Dishonored. Though not all the attention it's getting is positive because of them doing that.

It was simply a screen of Corvo. As this guy is the protagonist of the game, he is obviously the one you want featured.

The image was "teased" because if you first release a pic like this and then a trailer, the result is a little better exposure than if you had only released the trailer, with some additional writeups on blogs and gaming websites, etc.

True, and I'm not disagreeing with that... just stating the they chose a picture that could be linked to Skryim (which it was by many), and didn't really do much to stop the Skyrim hype because it got people interested in waiting for whatever it was.

It's undeniable that many people made this assumption, but I think much of the problem came from the fact that lots of people wanted this to be a Skyrim DLC announcement and weren't looking at all of the evidence. For example, lots of people were claiming that the guy in the teaser picture matched the Dovakiin poster - but they have different colored eyes and very different facial hair. Pete also pointed that many https://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/192065295366623232 were "delusional" and they work on games https://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/191990954008383488, which should have at least given pause although in my opinion it was a clear implication that this didn't involve Skyrim DLC (but then my opinion is biased by the fact that I didn't think it involved Skyrim from the get go).

I've been really surprised by how well Bethesda is marketing this game. I've seen over 10+ ads in the last hour and that's really exciting. Is anyone else happy about this?

Yeah, I've been seeing ads everywhere as well. They seem to be more confident in this one than most of the other games they've published over the years. Usually they just throw titles out to dry Q1 or Q2.

I am also very happy with the marketing strategy. Not overmarketed like Brink, but by no means unadvertized. Just right.

Glad you like the material that's been shared so far -- a lot of hard work when into that trailer.

More coming soon.

Haven't seen any ads at all although I've been looking up info on the game since it's announcement now and then.

The trailer looks pretty good because (as far as I'm concerned) the game itself has an awesome ambiance. So I guess that it does show the best of it.

Exactly. There's no need of any marketing, the only thing you should know to be 'hyped' is that there is a combo called: Arkane Studios - Harvey Smith - Viktor Antonov. Don't want know anything about the game until his release.

I would liked to have seen a trailer (even a gameplay trailer) back when GameInformer ran a cover story on Dishonored.

Gameplay first. Like the fact that awareness is being raised and sure this game looks very intresting but I will judge this more closely on how the feel of the game translates into gameplay. If they get it right this could be one awesome game.

I wouldn't worry about that. The marketing is all handled at our Rockville office, whereas the game development is happening in Austin, Texas and Lyon, France.

So was that trailer made entirely by Rockville, with Arkane serving mearly as advisors?
