Amazon Drone Delivery

Post » Wed Dec 04, 2013 6:11 am

What do you guys think? I am curious how this will go and what the FAA will do to regulate this in the future but I honestly think there will be people dumb enough to try to take it down or something if they see it flying by (just for kicks or to steal whatever it is holding). I really think Amazon will be facing a lot of hurdles to get this approved in the future.

This seems pretty bizarre.

30 minutes or less?

From the internet's largest retailer?

I suspect there's going to be quite a bit of drone wreckage on lawns across America, trying to deliver all that crap people order online.

Plot twist: Amazon is working with the NSA, and they're using this as a pretext to use the built-in camera on the drones to spy on the outside of our houses.

Yeah, those drones are going to be everywhere soon. Civilian, corporations, law enforcement, it's going to get busy in the skies :hehe:

LOL I can't see this working. At all. Those plastic tubs are cool though, do you have to return them? The only way I can see this working is if you live within an hours drive of one of their distribution plants. I can't see them flying a drone with a package for you across several hundred miles.

Obviously not. It'll probably limited to city and suburban areas.

I don't trust a drone to deliver the products I purchase. For all we know my neighbor may have anti-air defense systems used to take down drones and steal my treasures.

It's like something out of The Onion. Possibly one of the most bizarre business ideas I've ever heard. How does it work for people who live in apartments?

What I don't like is how it potentially normalises the idea of flying cameras everywhere. Eventually I can see police forces using these for community surveillance.

Is there a word for a Train Wreck in the sky? That's what this is going to be. Imagine how many sales Amazon would make in a city like LA or Miami or Phoenix. Coupling that with their move to food items and other staples of the grocery store world, they sky will be black with these buzzing machines. How long will people put up with the mechanical bee sounds that these things make?

I can see someone ordering something just to wait outside, with a baseball bat, for the drone to show up.

Yeah, they said it would just be in a radius around their "fulfillment centers."

And yeah..... there's LOTS of bugs to work out of this idea. Starting with all the safety issues (between the airspace crowding of little drones zooming around, to run-ins with birds, to run-ins with idiot people, etc). And then I can just picture some hackers coming up with a remote to attract all the drones in an area, grab the packages, and then jump in their truck & zoom off. Or some bored/paranoid dude with a shotgun taking potshots at them as they fly by his front porch.

I think Amazon should install some kind of self-defense mechanism on the drones, like a flamethrower or machine gun. I'm sure that'll turn out good.

I watched a piece on this on 60 minutes last night and they said it would be limited to orders that weigh 5 to 10 lbs and in metro areas near their warehouses. They also said it was 5 to 10 years out before it could become a reality. It would be two years just to get governmental approval. They discussed how they still have to work out many things like how to assure it didn't land on someones head.

I've read a lot of comments about this today around the web. Many talking about air piracy and such. Then someone said the following which is my favorite quote of the day:

" Imagine how bad road piracy would be if deliveries were made via trucks on highways! People could hijack an entire truck full of packages!"

I can already see this going wrong. I can already see people hacking these with their phones.

I'm sure they wouldn't launch this without top notch security features.
