Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs

Post » Thu Nov 01, 2012 7:55 pm

The year is 1899. Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus has returned home from a disastrous expedition to Mexico, which has ended in tragedy. Wracked by fever, haunted by dreams of a dark machine, he recovers consciousness in his own bed, with no idea of how much time has passed since his last memory. As he struggles to his feet, somewhere beneath him, an engine splutters, coughs, roars into life...

There is already a thread for the first game, and the general Amnesia thread is rather old, so I decided this game needed its own thread as well. I really enjoyed Amnesia: The Dark Descent, so I'm hyped about the sequel. Hopefully it'll live up to the expectations.

Also, since it's Halloween they released a http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vxwAGB6Tos0 for us, enjoy! It looks like there will be a lot more variety in the atmosphere and environment this time, which is really interesting.

Anyone else excited for this game?

I'm curious about it, but I honestly wonder if Frictional Games will be able to make lightning strike twice. I personally found Amnesia to be terrifying at first, but after the first time you got a proper encounter with one of the monsters the horror element of the game died very quickly. I think for a proper horrifying experience Frictional needs to work to make sure the game remains scarey the whole way through by never letting you feel as though you can survive through mere understanding of the game's mechanics.

Hopefully it'll be good though and fill the internet with a million Lets-Players with facecam jumping on the Youtube train to ching ching town. Because God knows we need more of them.

It looks great and can't wait to play it. I agree with Robbio somewhat but then all scary games lose their ability to shock after a period of playing - Fatal Frame, Call of Cthulhu, Doom 3, Silent Hill, Thief 3 Shalebridge Cradle etc etc. I think they need a more dynamic and random means of distracting your attention so they can spring their horrors and catch you off-guard, if such a thing is possible. Something to circumvent the brain's natural tendency to anticipate danger and protect us.

I would include deeper gameplay mechanics, even the ability to fight back but with meager weapons. Having larger environments with multiple missions would also help. Amnesia was so damn good I'm buying this on day one.

I loved Amnesia, but after the third encounter with a monster, I realised you could just sprint through most of the areas without fear. I actually spent the second half of the game throwing barrels at the monsters. Really wasn't a particularly scary game.

Looking forward to it, but like other posters am also hoping they can fix some of the flaws with the first game that quickly sapped the scariness from it. More varied environments are a good start, since repetition is poison to horror, and so is darker darkness, though that might just be a factor of YouTube quality. We'll see.
