If you're having trouble as a melee(or anything, I guess...), dragonrend them to the ground, and spam the first word of dragonrend and they stay staggered.

Ancient Dragons are some of the strongest enemies in the game(not counting the Legendary and Revered Dragons added in Dawnguard) and they have very high melee and fire/frost damage. I think they were designed to be a challenges for high level players.

Do you happen to play on master or expert?

Some of us in General Skyrim don't want to know anything about Dawnguard. So we stay out of Dawnguard. Spoiler tags would be considerate. :D

There's absolutely nothing spoiler-like about a new dragon type.

edit: They kinda moved this to the wrong place...

How do you get damaged? Do you get bitten or do you get most of the damage from the fire breath?

If you are having trouble with biting damage, what's your armor rating now? If it's less than 500, work on getting better armor by smithing or getting more perks in armor skills.

If you are having trouble with his shouts and breath attacks, then you want to increase your protection against this. 75% may not be enough. Move it up to 85%. And add another layer of protection. Get magic resistance and spell absorption. Use Atronach Stone or Lord Stone, get 3 perks in Alteration to get additional 30% magic resistance. Become an agent of Mara. Wear shield and jewelry that gives you better magic resistance.

My level 57 has no problem I have all heavy armors but I fight ancients in dwarven or nightingale no magic resistance but my armors are smithed to maximum capacity. Fighting with one handed daedric sword and they are a little bit of a pain but not that difficult. My difficulty is the same as yours and health the same with no enchantments on my dwarven armor. It could be a very uncommon glitch. Try and level up and see if the difficulty against them changes. You should only level up one level and see a change. Similar problem happened to me (not as bad but close) after leveling once I noticed they seemed weakened.

wow...im lvl 63 on my main...built for stealth and magicka, VL... play on master with health of 250ish or so...yes they hit damn hard but it sounds as if u just stand there taking a beating... whats wrong with hiding behind a rock or using a shield? use your skills damn it. I can see why people get pissed off about things that make them feel the game has been dumbed down to cater for dumb people.

Its a huge powerful ancient dragon Shouting rock melting flame at you and your complaining because you cant stand in the full force of its fury without getting killed. Its supposed to be dangerous getting behind something fire proof and whipping out the bow is the first thing I do when one shows up.

Todd Howard stated that there would be Revered and Legendary Dragons before Dawnguard even launched, so yeah, not a spoiler. By the way, did you know there are Vampires in Dawnguard? Oh Noes! We need spoiler tag for that!
