High level power armor makes you very tough. Also the way the enemy ai work makes npcs (who tend to stand around or make themselves available as targets quite often) in power armor much squishier than the player. A couple good hits with most weapons will destroy a BOS power armor helmet and make them an easy kill.
If you're above Level 28 there should be a full suit of X-01 Power Armor inside the 35 Court. If you have 1 Science, 4 Armorer, 50 adhesive, 69 aluminum, 56 ceramic, 38 circuitry, 8 nuclear material, and 38 rubber you should be able to fully upgrade it to Mark VI for even more protection.
You might want to try other weapons like the Gauss Rifle against Power Armor btw, the Gatling Laser has a high rate of fire but low damage per shot making it a bit lacking against heavily armored enemies, IMO.
what weapon perks are you using? On the two playthroughs where I went against them, I found rifles naturally to be the best choice for the armor piercing that comes with the perk line. I'd also suggest, if you haven't gotten it already, buy overseers guardian from the trader down in vault 81. In my other playthrough I mowed them down with a modified gatling laser while wearing fully decked out x-01 but that might be overkill, you could also easily get through by wearing ballistic weave clothing if you have access to it.. Other tips would include staying in cover as much as possible, since they rarely if ever advance to your position, pick them off one by one, it can take a bit of time but it works too. Attacking them head on can be brutal unless you're prepared with the above mentioned armors and also make generous use of chems, overdrive is amazing.
You are supposed to infiltrate it, so use Stealth Boys to stealthily reach and destroy the generators. After that, you will have a lot of Synths fighting the BoS and you even have some beacons that can summon more (may as well arm yourself with several Synth Relays Granades to summon more of them). Just be careful when Liberty Prime's haching is nearly done: Elder Maxson will drop down and fight you, and he is no easy enemy.
Sneak pass them, and as long as you destroy the first base, all the synths will spam endlessly, just let them do the heavy work and tank for you. I didn't even have power armor on (had Ballistic Weave) and played on the hardest mode, it's possible to do it with or without Power Armor, but it is the hardest quest out of any route.
Don't know what base you're talking about, and don't know how far you progressed the MM questline, but at a certain point, you should be able to give them a good shelling before going in. Assuming we're talking about Boston Airpoort.
It's the last quest for the Institute where you need to fight by yourself and destroying 3 intercept signals that prevent the Institute synths from relaying into the airport, it's heavily guarded and you will likely be killed instantly if you go in through the front door.
Don't teleport in directly from the institute teleport room. FT/Teleport to some place nearby, walk there, then climb to the top of the parking garage and pick 'em off one by one.
Don't worry, though, there's still plenty of opportunity to die
Oh, I remember this quest... I too thought I was supposed to 'infiltrate' through the main door, and spent half an hour and half of my ammo reserves cherry tapping power-armored Knights with miniguns and dodging missiles, until I noticed that hole in the wall... But then it took me another half hour to find the damn generators. And then came the main event, defending the synth infecting Prime, where I kept falling off the scaffolding straight into the fray. And then a vertibird with Maxson and his gatling laser showed up.
Though I think you don't even technically have to kill Maxson, just hold the line long enough and a Courser will relay you to a safe place. But if you're like me you want that coat, so...
Half the reason people sided against the BoS is for that damn sweet coat.
heres an idea, When you first get the airport as a settlement. go there and make a ladder or stairs up to the platform above. Then block it off so you can get to it from the water side. If no one can see you and you have cover then things might be easier. Just make sure either you have some rad protection or have the perk aqua boy/girl.
This is if you have decided to go against the BOS from the beginning.
Depending on where these signals are located, you still can call artillery strikes in. If you provided all or at least most settlements with big guns. In my game there's hardly any place left that's out of range.
For Power Armor, a good tactic is shooting the Fusion Core in VATS. Has the Knight get out of his suit and creates a huge explosion.
At the point where the Vertibird on the pad starts to spin up to attack you, an artillery strike works wonders.
BOS and Vertibird pieces flying everywhere.
Actually - that is the only time I ever used an artillery strike.
I wonder if you could use the Flair Gun to invite the Minutemen... that would make the whole battle even more colorful ;P
I'm calling it at any given opportunity. Especially when I visit the same old place because of raider or ghoul trouble and I really got no interest fighting the same old enemies in the same positions.
Question, If I construct loads of turrets in the boston airport settlement, will they be able to help me in that battle?
The settlement is no longer belong to you if I'm not mistaken, so they probably wouldn't fight on your side, if it belongs to the BoS, it may have an opposite effect.
If I make a player based terminal hooked up to them and I lose control of the turrets, can I hack it and turn them back?
