Anybody play D&D ?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 8:53 am

I've never actually played D&D, but I always loved the Dark Sun setting. If they made that into a video game... :cryvaultboy:  :touched: :woot:

It's actually the setting for several video games. I haven't played any of them though so I can't say if they're any good.

Admittedly, good luck finding copies. Who owns the old SSI collections anyway? They need to be convinced to make a GoG re-release.

Are they good? How do they compare to, say, Fallout or Betrayal at Krondor?

 @ Wolf's :ninja: skills!

No idea sorry. I only know of them from an ad at the back of an old SSI game manual. The SSI D&D games have a good reputation for the most part, but their age may have taken off some of the shine.

And ninja skills? I think you're just getting old dr_booker. It took me a good ten minutes to dig up that manual.

If this was an attempt at humor, it didn't work.
Really? I thought it was funny, please don't moderate my sense of humor, it makes me unhappy inside.

That being said, I love D&D, I really do. I'm not that much of a nerd, but my sole nerdy pleasure is D&D, I got into it a little later then most I think, largely because I was always told it was something fat kids did in their mothers basemant, but when I tried it, I was blown away, it takes imagination; and I like games that require imagination. I know pathfinder and others like it are improved versions of D&D, but I'm a junkie for the basics; I'm generally a wizard.

I really want to but firstly my friend and I went into the Game Workshop and the guys playing just literally stopped and stared at us the entire time we were looking around (they sold merchandise too...). It was one of the creepiest moments ever - they just downed their cards/models etc and stared.

Secondly a guy I used to date now works in there and I'd personally rather not see him again.

I played 3.5 in high school with my buddies. It was really a lot of fun, although I usually had to multi-task being DM and rogue because we didn't have enough folks. We still had a very good time. Haven't done anything since I've come off to college, and I kind of miss it.

I played two of those. I remember them being decent, but it was a long time ago.

I want to DM a game of 3.5, but I unfortunately don't have time for it due to the fact that I'm a player in two 4e games.

I'm pretty hyped about 5th edition, can't wait for the public play-testing to begin.

P.S. I started playing D&D in 2000 with the 3rd edition starter set. I was actually reading the adventure book from the starter set last night and it's pretty awesome. I was thinking of adapting it to fit my setting and use it as an intro for whenever I do eventually get my own game started.

They are already making a 5th Edition, thats just stupid, it better be better than 4e, cause 4e was just.....

Yea, there's nothing quite like it. No form of media can really replicate it effectively.

It was something I always wanted to get into at school, but none of my friends were ever bothered.

(...)

Maybe it's just a poor guy's confession?

Seriously, I love D&D but I would never lead a session (as in be a DM). There was actually quite a fun story back when I was introduced to all this D&D story. We were explained how characters work, and how classes work, DM helped me in character generation, and I decided I'll go for the Drow Ranger, and my backstory included a Drow escaping from from their underground city. Friend replied "Ha, I didn't know you're a fan of Forgotten Realms" and I was like "fan of what?". After he was well confused, he followed with "man, I have a book here that you'll definitely like" and that's how I also found out about the FR serial of books.

It sounds like they're trying to make it more similar to 2nd and 3rd edition, while still drawing in 4th edition players. At this point, it could become either a great success or a total disaster. If it is a disaster, then I'll just stick to 3.5 or Pathfinder.

http://www.enworld.org/index.php?page=dnd5e is a link that has a lot of info on the direction 5th edition is going in, if you're interested.

I'll be there on the 6th. I don't have room for my D&D books in my suitcase, though.
wow it's March already, really time flies. How long are you going to stay?

hahaha. Come to HK, most of us are married guys or only into oriental girls. So you should get more stares from the on lookers than the player community lol.

Haven't played D'n'D since Oriental Adventures was out. Just checked, it was published in 1985. Now I feel old.

Usually i love going into GW stores and harrasing them about their crap paint jobs, model work then pointing out if they open their mouths i can snap them like a twig, thats the only reason i go in there.

Ive played Original D&D, 1st and 2nd ed and 3.5, hate 4th edition its like a cheap computer game on paper, but theres basically not to many RPG's i havent played since i started playing at the start of the 80's. Gamma world is really old school, i still have an original copy somewhere, TSR's attempt at a sci fi RPG, but traveller was always better then.

I have the 3.5 players book but could never find a group. I also want to get into Call of Cthulu, but again no local interest.

I wish there was a D&D with the flavour of 2E and the mechanical ease of 3E and 4E. Not that I'd play them, but I do like to read the manuals.

Not in a while, but I'm currently looking for a Vampire the Masquerade PnP group. Pretty hard to find any games groups that don't involve overpriced figurines or playing cards in my area.

I played years ago at my old school, and DM'd for ~ 3 months this year. Then I just got sick of about half of my playgroup* and stopped. I have to say, the weird thing about DnD is how much more fun it is to think / read about than it is to play, imho.

*One was severely dysgraphic and was way too into martial arts. He talked about his ability to beat up the rest of the playgroup all the time. I'm sure he wasn't bluffing, because he really did know what he was talking about, but I didn't particularly enjoy hearing about it. Also: dysgraphia isn't condusive to PnP RPGs. The other one who caused issues for me had disgusting eating habits, and couldn't keep his body covered. He had some sort of skin condition, so it really wasn't his fault, but I didn't enjoy watching him scratch his chest and legs all the time. They were great people in a lot of other ways, but just not very pleasant for me to be around / play with.

Yeah it is if you play with a bunch of shut-ins and sociopaths. I play it with friends I've known for a long time.
