Anyone else seeing tons of winks at Underworld?

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 2:28 pm

I'm wondering if all the names from the Underworld series with just one letter off and the great resemblance of things like the Vampire Lord form and even several of the new outfits is meant as an hommage of sorts, or simply as a case of inspiration going a bit far? Hell even the chamber where you meet Serana is, well, without spoilers, highly reminiscent of a scene from the first Underworld, no?

Perhaps its simply a case of the fact that there's simply SO MUCH Vampire material out there nowadays that its hard NOT to accidently look like you're err.. borrowing heavily?

Yeah I honestly thought the same thing. Especially with the way you meet Serena. In fact I think she even looks like the actor in the series.

It is very similar in some cases to where it has to be a tribute imo.

The same can be said about the main game and Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, by that logic, though.

Yes! The fact Serana even LOOKS like Selene blew my mind

I'm sure they wont mind a bit of hommage from Bethesda though, if that is really the intent. Hell, when the makers of Underworld got sued by White Wolf for similarities in concepts with Vampire the Masquerade, they defended themselves saying these ideas were all so overused that they were clearly public domain. Which is a respectable argument, really.

Perhaps, yes. Maybe it's just a thought that popped in my head and I've been running on confirmation bias since.

Well that maybe a tribute to that but the woodcutters axe can be found all over Skyrim in places that make it clear they aren't just used for woodcutting. Cheese cutting, goat/horse/cow/etc meats and more.

However I have not explore much of Castle Volkihar so they maybe placed in a way it reference's the movie?

Yes and yes. She just happens to be one of my dream women :P

Back on topic: i also felt like someone in the main Dawnguard team is obviously a huge Underworld fan which is something I don't mind at all since I absolutely love the first two movies (Rise of the Lycans was mediocre but passable and Awakening was...well I treat that movie like most Star Wars fans treat the prequel trilogy: pretend it never happened)

The Vampire Lord's look, Serena's underground "coffin". The way she looks and even the name similarity are all thing that immediately came to mind. Of course it doesn't help that I was immediately reminded of the opening scene in the first movie when my Vampire came across a werewolf in the wilderness and i just happened to be wearing Thalmor robes which practically scream "leather long coat vampire fights lycan." I actually find myself quoting Markus When appropriate while Rp'ing heh.

Also this is probably me just making things fit because I am biased but did anyone else notice the great deal of over-enunciation Harkon was making when you first meet him and during the VL tutorial he gives you? Over-enunciation just happens to be one of Bill Nighy's (Viktor) most famous mannersims :P

Viktor's daughter issues and her love for a werewolf is similar to Serana's respect and possibly love for a mortal/mixed breed vampire. He killed his daughter for the greater of his kind. Harkon wants to kill his daughter for the betterment of his kind and species. Even his voice sounds a bit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoqgQn3kcKE. I also noticed Harkon hates werewolves and finds the disease filthy.

The werewolves look similar: http://files.g4tv.com/ImageDb3/288311_S/werewolf-skyrim.jpgand http://www.vfxtalk.com/feature/luma_pictures/underworld2/wwf_wolf.jpg.

Isran is Blade.
Speaking of which, there was also a nod to Blade where the pureblooded vampires feel resentful toward turn bloods or half-breeds. Though I don't mind any of the similatiries.

Sadly, seems like vampires got similarities to Twilight with the no fangs scenario.

Their eyes glow. They have no fangs. They do not burn in the sun.

Uh...what? I'm sorry but my vampires show up with fangs-a-plenty. They all have fangs for me when I check by looking real close while they talk. Also I have fangs as well. Just get in to any fight. The moment an enemy shows up your character does that "angry face". The mouth is half open from a snarl and you can very clearly see fangs. I have no idea where all this "no fangs" talk is coming from (i see it as a complaint in so many different threads and the spread of misinformation annoys the hell out of me) because it is utter hogwash.

I think thats because skyrim is a different strain but hey at least they get weakened in the sun instead of just sparkling I would take weakened over sparkling any day.

Well, I stand happily corrected with knowing fangs are in.

Yeah, I know, different strain and all. But I have a feeling vampires might not get sun damage at all next game.

Morrowind: Constant sun damage.

Oblivion: Constant sun damage, when fed, however, you can walk in the sun unharmed for a single day.

Skyrim: No sun damage, but character is weakened.

They do not burn in the sun.
Dracula, in his titular novel, could walk in daylight. As far as I'm aware, Nosferatu was the first appearance of the whole "weakness to the sun" thing. I've never understood why people tack-on so many weaknesses to the Vampire.

Balance really. So many people only care about power, and if there were no downsides vampirism would simply be a buff.

However, it's extremely hard to convey the feelings the character would have regarding undeath.
