Anyone else still not decided on a first character?

What's the best way to experience the game the first time through, in your opinion?

And people who have played: how's your first build working out?

i decided to go Dark elf. Good in magic stealth and some warrior stuff in there. All good around character not to mention they have 25% resist to fire and look badass.
I'm going to play it slow and not fast travel anywhere.

I havent decided what character i want to play either, i have been trying to deprive myself from some info so that once i start the game up i can just be blown away. I might play Nord but i am not sure i know ill be a melee based character but defiantly want to mess with the magic system as well so i am torn.

I thought Dunmer had a 75% resistance to fire?

I think I will choose the race that I think looks coolest. In the end game they all are viable

First time through I'd recommend a one hander with shield and heavy armor. If the "more enemies" stuff I've seen is true you might be kind of sad after that first backstab or getting spotted while sneaking about. It's always nice handle taking a couple of shots.

Making your character is a big part of the game. My wife and myself will spend at least an hour debating and nit-picking features. After all, your character, like you are in it for the long haul.

Do the different races still have varying starting stats like in Oblivion, or is the only difference active & passive racial abilities?

I'm interested in making a specialized character as my first. I'll start doing other ideas with future characters, but for now it's gotta be specialized. As much as I wanna do a pure mage, like I've done in all of the other Elder Scrolls games as my first character, I feel like I'll be missing out big time...

A pure mage wouldn't focus on certain skills that I'd like to try out, like for example, Smithing, so I'm struggling to decide on whether my first character should be a pure warrior or a pure mage.

After watching the IGN livestream, and seeing how fragile a pure mage is without using armor spells, it seems like it wouldn't be a good decision for a first character, not to mention, he had a lot of downtime both in and out of combat, choosing spells for both of his hands.

Well yea, I want to go nord, because I want to [censored] the empire and that elven union, by joining the rebels. However not all sure how he'll fit my play style - which is still undecided.

i havent played an elder scrolls game since morrowind(oblivion for an hour) i did play morrowind at great length, but have ignored this game until yesterday, so ive been in a complete info vacuum, which i think is going to make my gaming experience sa-weet!!! i forgot about all the different races, and armor, and weapons.....

...but anyhow, ive been considering this very question, and would really like to go the mage-with-a-twist-of-wolf route, but i have to wait and see because like i said, i dont even remember any of the races other than nords and elves=)

Going Imperial first.

Skills:
One handed
Speech
Smithing
Sneak
Lock-picking
Light-armour

Most of my perks will deal with speech perks that deal with speech options. Armourer, sneak, and locksmithing. And a few in one-handed.

Going to let my talking do most of the talking.

Then my Dark elf Necromancer -

Conjuration
Restoration
Illusion
Alteration
Alchemy
Enchanting

I'm really torn between a Dunmer Battle-Mage or a Khajiit Assassin.

I'll decide soon enough though. :)

I know I'll be a Nord Battlemage, but I'll remake him in the morning and see where I go from there. Did a quick run to see how my rig would run Skyrim and to check it out. Now off to bed (prolly gonna lie awake for some hours thinking about my future character :P).

Anyone else noticed that there don't seem to be many people going for the high elf / altmer race? Same could be said for orc I suppose.

I was going to start as a bosmer thief style character with archery and some spell casting, but I've since decided to go for the khajiit which I think is a bit more suitable and a lot better looking!

RAF1940, I recommend you just pick a race you like and make the character as cool looking as possible. Don't plan a build - just go out and do whatever comes most naturally to you. If it's not fun, stop doing it. Your character will naturally evolve into exactly what you want to be playing.

That's the theory, at least!

Personally, I have four different characters with full personalities and backstories all written up. Gonna make them all tonight and rotate between them all day tomorrow :)

Playing a nord spellsword (heavy armor, one handed, smithing, enchanting, and some spells I find cool, don't know enough at this time to choose schools) as my first, he'll be the self-stylized champion of the nords and will likely play the game in a fairly predictable manner, the second will likely be a dunmer spellthief/assassin and will be there to show the path not taken, I'm tempted to make a full on wizard at some point too, but I feel the need to get a feel for the game before trying something like that

I got my character totally planned out. Nord - Swords/Axes/Daggers/Shield , Heavy Armor for combat, Light Armor/Clothing for infiltration, Stealth/Sneak, No Magic except for healing. Written in stone.

I know what race I'm mostly going to play, but still torn onto which concept I'm going to do.
In RPG's, I usually play a warrior first to learn the mechanics. However, I'm a TES veteran who's seen easily 90% of the released gameplay videos and a couple of Lets Plays, so I know all there is to know regarding that, so I may be able to just jump right into my preferred playstyle - thieves and assassins.
