I think the others above have said it best... you might want to stop trying to do the min/max thing and just go with a variety of playstyles.
Allow me to use myself as an example...
For a couple days I go off on a journey (on foot... no fast travel) from one capital city to another, hitting as many holds, caves, ruins, ect along the way that I can....
When I get to the city, I sell off my junk - and then I spend the next few hours ran-sacking the place.
Then, if there's a home in that city, I go and spend the next couple days re-decorating a few hours a day...
In-between decorating sessions I take breaks and hit a local cave or dungeon... or go on a guard-killing spree.
After I'm done decorating, I start my journey back to Whiterun... (usually re-sets by the time I'm done with the city/area I was at).
Sometimes I break it up by taking a week to learn a new spell/profession...
Sometimes I break it up more by gathering all my garbage, hitch a ride on the cart and literally become a caravan wanderer - going from city to city to trade/sell everything I smithed/looted up.
May I also suggest tossing in some radiant quests in there. When I first did them, I thought "That's it? These are just boring-simple..." but that's when I discovered to use them along with my gameplay method.
Now, I can say "Hey, I got 3 quests in Riften and one for Windhelm, I can first hit riften and knock those out... then journey onto Windhelm.
The radiant quests change from being the focus goal to just being the carrot that sends me in a particular direction for my new journey.
