Anyone know how random Thane weapons really are?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:20 am

I know that the weapons you get for becoming Thane are partially random. Namely if it's an axe and what enchantment it has. But I kind of remember reading that it does take into account your play style when deciding between one handed or two handed. Now I'm 66 at one handed with invested perks, and 22 at two handed with zero perks.

Why then after 6 reloads does he keep giving me a giant two handed ebony war ax for my blade of the reach? Over a nice one handed glass axe that I see other people posting about?

The wiki even goes so far to say that for the blade of the reach you have a 50% chance of a one handed 50% of two handed.

some of those are level scaled. So really rare if you get them at high level and really common if you get them at low level

On my last playthrough I got 3 iron swords from different holds and was pretty high in levels like late 70's, the enchantments were different but all iron swords...

I think that's how it works aye? get them early in the game like from whiterun I got a dwarven battle axe.

Some holds have set weapons, some have level scaling weapons. I think the Pale Thane is level scaled, i always got ebony by the time i got that one.

Thane weapons are as random as all other loot items. What bites me is that Riften doesn't have one, so I enchant a mace and name it Mace of the Rift. Or club. Or cudgel

I can't see why Bethesda didn't personalise them a little more, ala unique artefacts (or at least consistent weapons with personality). I assume it was to accomodate multiple playstyles, but the weapons come off as bland, cheap and careless when they're meant to be highly sentimental tokens to be treasured.

It's a shame. If they were anything decent, I'd hang them up or maybe even use them. As things are, I simply disenchant them or stash them in some dusty old container to be forgotten.

Oh, and this goes for rewards for promotion in the civil war questline as well. Whilst scaled loot lacking any personality whatsoever is bad enough as a memento of when you made Quaestor, I had the biggest dissapointment of my life when
Spoiler
even the final reward in the civil war questline was generic crap you might loot in any Oblivion cave. Seriously, Tullius' sword is some crappy level-specific blade with a mediocre enchantment? How about making it consistent, or giving it some personality with a skin, or, heaven forbid, at least naming it Tullius' Sword?
I was expecting a worthy token that would forever represent that proud moment I became a Legate, and instead I got rubbish. One of those covered Imperial helms would be nice, or Tullius style armour. Sigh.

Yeah, there's a quest in Morrowind where your reward is a Daedric weapon. And you get to choose what class of weapon you get. Long Blade, Marksman, Blunt, et cetera. Would be nice if you could choose your reward here.

I don't think having the choice would be fitting. I don't like that it is random either. The item should be based on the "personality" of the hold/Jarl. It doesn't feel right to get an Elven Battleaxe with Soul Trap for being the Thane of Whiterun.

Well, the weapon I got from Balgruff was a Battleaxe, and I am dual wielding, so it was completely worthless to me. I'm not asking them to replace an axe with a bow or anything like that, with the choices now being limited to One Handed, Two Handed and Archery. I just dont want to end up with a bunch of Two Handed weapons that will gather dust in my house. And I'm sure people using Two Handers would get annoyed at recieving a One Handed weapon. And I'm not asking to be allowed to choose the Enchantment, cause that would just be over the top.

All I know is if I concentrate on One handed skill I always seem to get a two handed weapon and visa versa.

You can use a different weapon from time to time... it's not like you always have to be the best of the best of the best.

On all of my characters, I've received a war axe (1-handed) from the Jarl of Whiterun, ranging from steel to orcish with varying enchantments. Never got a 2-hander.
