Thanks for starting this topic Valamyr because I too wanted to know at what point they begin.

Knowledge is power.

Basically we know that the rise in 'random dragon' spawns is triggered by reaching certain parts of the main quest. Todd told us already that those who didnt pursue this wouldnt 'get spammed by random dragons' weeks ago.

Random dragons matter because another piece of info we know is that they can wreck havoc on settlements and kill NPCs. This means its probably ideal to tackle the "key" point of the main quest where they become a thing only once you're ready to handle it... ideally, anyhow.

Thing is, nobody leaked yet what this point is exactly, and thats the purpose of this thread. Can we do the whole "Thane/Lydia" part without triggering the dragon spawns? If so, can we also do the whole "Elders atop the 7000 steps" part safely? Does the point of no return come after that?

Its worth knowing, because I'll definitely want to pause for awhile and do other stuff at the critical juncture. Thanks for sharing anything you know about this!

From what I've witnessed:

Spoiler
The first dragon you fight and have to kill is shortly after you arrive at Whiterun and talk to the Jarl. It is part of a quest the Jarl gives you. After you kill this named dragon random dragons will begin to spawn. This is very early in the Main Quest.

Alright we have a concensus. Now my question; who will slightly delay killing the first dragon / getting Lydia because of this?

Think critically asking yourself what person would deliberately tell you such a detail of the MQ for a game not released yet?
... this is called the spoiler sections for a reason... -_-

Dragons will start appearing after you complete a certain quest for the Jarl of Whiterun.
It's very, very early on.

This. Reminds me of how Oblivion Gates start after Saving Martin from Kvatch in Oblivion.

Why people worry about dragons when they're so pathetically weak.. from many sources...

They are not pathetically weak, my friend. People only survive them at low levels by pretty much emptying their reserve of potions. And they usually have the aid of an unkillable follower.
On topic: the comments about the Jarl of Whiterun are indeed correct, as the first dragon is fought during that quest.

If they are need for quest they don't die when seriously harm they just go unconscious. Its what happen in oblivion also. The more you go into the MQ the more they show up they start to randomly show up after you help kill the dragon for the jarl. the farther you go them more then randomly show up. After you kill the first dragon they show up once in a great while. The farther in the MQ when you start learning more shouts and need more dragon souls they start to come out more also to stop you from the quest.

Actually this is so lame...

Wouldn't the Radiant Story choose another character to be the quest givers after the original ones demise?

Certain NPCs are considered "protected" indicating they cannot be killed other than by the player, while others still are like in Oblivion and cannot be killed at all.

Me: I plan to hang around Riverwood for a while, hunting, fishing, running some local errands, exploring nearby caverns, relaxing as best I can after my ordeal...

Lol. I think the most anticipated feature of this game (for me anyway) is going to be killing dragons. I "accidentally" watched a video of a person killing a random dragon and he said it was awesome and addictive. I'm going to rush the MQ at first just so that dragons can randomly appear! I have no idea why you would want to postpone that?

Why is everyone so worried about getting Lydia? There's other Jarls to do quests for without doing the main quest line, who will grant property rights and housecarls. I plan to have my first home in the autumnal village of Riften.

I'm sorry, but that guy is a complete idiot. I ALMOST considered not watching those videos because of his commentary. It's almost like watching a 10 year old play it. and he calls Lydia Karl all the time. Her name is Lydia her title is Huscarl, how hard is that, really? He stops talking to people in the middle of a sentence and wonders why his quest didn't update, he shoots people with the Force attack and wonders why guards attack him. It was almost unbearable. The only redeeming factor was that we get to see some Skyrim in action and it looks awesome.

I just hope dragons don't kill all the normal NPC's. Otherwise there will just be two or three quest NPC's walking around, making it very dull.

He knows, it's his way of joking around, but he does show his inexperience when he expects things to happen immediately, though he is not the only one, virtually every play through I've seen have had players with arcade tactics, I've only seen one where the player is taking time to think.

Yeah that's pretty much how CoD\Halo players play TES games. Kind of expected really.

So basically, avoid killing the Dragon for the Jarl of Whiterun and you won't encounter dragons? Fair enough, I want to be at least level 30 before I take on any dragons

That or just don't talk to the Jarl at all. Ignore him.

That's what I plan to do. 8D

Yeah, I might join the Companions, then go north to Winterhold and join the mage guild. Do a few quests, then come back down to Whiterun, kill the dragon and get Lydia.
