Anything for Doom 3 Steam owners?

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 9:59 pm

Okay, id, listen here. As you probably know (you SHOULD know it, at least), the PC crowd is still bitter at you guys for what Carmack said last fall. The absence of promised high-resolution texture pack and level editor didn't help things. At all. But! Now is your chance to win back at least some of people who were alienated back then! You should make Doom 3: BFG Edition available as a free upgrade to those, who already own Doom 3 and ROE on Steam, or at least for those who own the Doom Pack. Look at CD Projekt - they offered the Enhanced Editions of the Witcher 1 and 2 as free upgrades for people who already owned the games and gathered themselves a vast and loyal following. It would be very classy and smart. And/or you should give the owners of RAGE some bonus. Just sayin', id. Just sayin'.

Rage owners don't deserve anything. but i do agree about doom3 and expansion owners should get a free upgrade or a tiny fee fr upgrade... ain't gona pay for more than 20 usd just for 7 new levels.

just curious, the editor wasn't included in the Steam version of Doom 3. in the original CD version the editor was in the game's executable (Doom3.exe) & could be accessed via a custom shortcut
here's a page explaining how it was accessed

I was referring to the editor and texture pack of RAGE.

carmack never 'promised' hires texture pack. he tossed out some possibilities, though.

Yes. Yes he did. And then canceled it.

Got a source on the "promised" high-res texture pack? Otherwise, what's with the sense of entitlement?

Well, for myself, I always felt that the lack of ability to activate many games on Steam that you already own the disc for but want to activate them via Steam as a backup (and simpler to install/execute) was a very big problem that has never been addressed, not just by id but also many other companies. Even Bioware/EA did this mistake for ME 1 owners.

We'll see how this release is priced and if I am forced to use the new flashlight (I prefer the original, myself).

You cant do that because Steam is a seperate publishing system from pressed dvds. Thus the keys are in a separate pool. Rival publishers wont work together like that. VERY few games support cross registration. Those that do have essentially agreed that Steam is the drm of choice and has given Valve full control of key generation. The dvds are just hard copies of steam game archives.

If you own Doom 3 on Steam, it's ten dollars off for BFG edition.

So if I bought BFG thatd be 4 times for Doom3 and 5 for the rest. HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO BUY THEM.

Ive bought the QC pack atleast twice now. once when it was first released on Steam and again here last year when gamesass titles were included. So I agree for the most part that there should be some sort of discount coupon for PC steam owners who already own 90% of the BFG Pack. Steam has coupons now you know it makes it easier than the Stalker claim check idea that GSC had to use. Speaking of which Maybe I should support the indie Devs more. it seems the mainstream devs are to into making it mainstream and porty for consoles to add the little features that make the core diehards happy. you know features like COOP,
or PTT,
or Editors,
or Mod tools,
or
higher res options that showcase the true capabilities of the engine that is supposed to be so amazing it deserves its own IP just to showcase MEGAtextures but looks like [censored] when the graphic artists cant even alpha map a sprite to blend into the negative space well so that these little tricks that load quick and look good (if done right) are used in place of more modern techs like particle physics or fluids and is compared and beaten by a 5 year old engine like UE3 or Even a heavily modded version of a previous IDtech engine like that used in COD:blops2 or L4D2 making people really wonder what this great studio has been doing for the past 8 years; incorperating age old tweaks into their last great game as well as finishing a few cut levels?

With RAGE out, this last year should have been used to create Doom4 using any and all of gamesass creative resources to show us that it will be coming on the anniversary next year. but we know nothing as of yet, other than we get a slapped together BFG edition that doesnt even have coop. or the Doom3 classic mod like update to doom. (go get that mod im serious might be ep1 of doom so 13 levels, but its great).

PS. ID was great back when they were indie. Support those who still think PC is where its at, like: Frozenbyte, Frictional, Croteam, Vostok, Tripwire, Techland, Farm 51, CD Projekt RED, among others. none of them are based in texas. in fact 4 are polish, rest are all over europe(except Tripwire). must be hard for them to market a game to a foreign country and language(except Tripwire). Must be hard on them to create PC only games and survive with VAT (except Tripwire; i think the only thing tripwire needs to concern themselves with is gators and hurricanes).

We got this pulled together this week, so the game is now $19.99 on PC.

20$ for what? a high res texture pack, that can be found in mods. a Widescreen fix did that last year. coop? nope thats a mod(that sort of works). the cut levels? that are more like a DLC pack. 20$ for a dlc map pack.

see its a great deal for 30$ if you DONT OWN any dooms. but for those who have had Doom3 since 2004 as well as doom since 1993 and bought them again on steam for convenience, or for a second or third time everytime the QC has something amazing added to it. then I dont see the benefit. There has been more done with Zdoom and texture packs to the originals that you can now play a Call of duty like mod, or a supreme mega monster like mod with EVERY sprity villian and dozens of variants. most everything that needs to be in Doom3 for upgrades has been done by the community for free.

For the loyal fans like myself BFG is a waste.
