APPAREL MENU (absolute) FAIL

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 1:13 am

The Oblivion clothing/apparel menu was far more intuitive.

This is a classic case of 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it'.

Applying, mixing and matching clothes, with a visual representation is far more engaging and intuitive and fun!

Now I have to scroll up and down for ages to make sure I have arm-greaves on or what not... it's really really long-winded, painful and RSI-invoking.

We all change clothes for the circumstance throughout the game. I certainly do,... as much as changing weapons... they go hand-in-hand.

(what was Bethesdas thinking behind this???)

***Please patch the game and BRING BACK a visual avatar representation in the CLOTHING/APPAREL menu!!!***

Thank you!

I miss the old paper doll, too. Even if we can't dress it up by dragging and dropping, at least let us see what our char looks like!

What are the chances that Bethesda would bring back (perhaps even a small rotatable avatar) into the ITEMS menu as a patch?

It is simply better, easier and more intuitive (not to mention cool to appreciate the items and art that went into each helmet, weapon etc etc....).

Scrolling through text is maddness. It's like they hired a Microsoft UI designer and gave him the task of creating the ITEMS section.

I'm not sure they realized how much more immersive/sence-of-belonging this gave the player...

Massive disappointment there, but it can be FIXED! :)

You can also just rotate your 3rd person camera before entering the menu and see the changes live. I think the ideal solution would be to have this camera shift occur automatically when entering the inventory. Currently awaiting the mod that'll do exactly that.

That's a great idea. Hope they implement it with a patch :)

It's strange to me how hooked some people get on how there character looks, in a game where no one else see's you.. and you barely see your own character at all :/

False assumption on your part.
Which, I'm going to assume is something you do a lot of. cough.

I run around in 3rd person all the time and only use 1st person as situations merit.

As for the OP's complaint. It is easy to work around though not optimal. Merely zoom out a bit from your character and rotate the camera enough to clear the
apparal/inventory menu when you bring it up. YOu can then see how your armor changes look.

I agree, even if the UI was flawless and bugfree, it's still a pretty bad UI. It's all flash, and no function. Even Oblivions UI was better.

Okay... that's what we call a stupid thing to say. "I like it. So you're not allowed to anymore. And if you do and voice it, I'm going to call you a troll."

Kid, that's not how you debate, argue, or prove a point. THAT is trolling, far more than the OP. Learn to debate/talk to people and then come back to let us know why you prefer one system over the other in a logical and mature way. Okay? Okay.

As for the OP... I agree. I don't care much for this UI. But I'm also bitter that they're showing an obvious preference for the consoles over the PC, even though the PC market is what MADE their company and put them where they are. I know the Console market is bigger these days, but that doesn't mean you toss your foundation out the window and tell them to 'svck it up'.

I look forward to Bethesda either fixing this issue themselves, or a hard working modder to come in and do their job for them.

I think I liked the oblivion UI myself better on console as well. I thought we were able to sort our inventory by weight and price too before...also not having the dress up doll is a downer IMO. This new UI seems to take more clicking and button pushing with the new magic system where you have to have a free hand.

(what was Bethesdas thinking behind this???)

The major problems with the UI, including the lack of paper doll, were pointed out the very day they released the first public pictures of it months ago. There were many people here that took a lot of time to review and list the issues and suggest fixes.

They did not do a single thing to fix any of it.

I really like the new menu system; though it would be a lot better if they let us see our character.

To be honest I dont understand what the whole issue is about ( I'm a console player) I get that it's sometimes hard to know wether you have equipped something or not due to the fact it doesn't exactly tell you outright, but other than that i'm not having an issue with it. It's just a case of getting used to something that's new. I personally think its far more streamlined and less chunky than Oblivions.

I miss the paper doll but It's really not that difficult to dress your character. An arrow appears next to the item when you equip it. Therefore you know what still needs to be equipped. It's really not that difficult.

I think PC gaming is a dying art. Don't get me wrong, it's a a shame but at the end of the day it's a business choice and the right one at that; provide for the console gamer. They havn't said 'svck it up' to the PC gamer. You still have the game do you not? You don't make money by looking backwards. If it svcks that hard on PC then buy it for your console.

The game, at the end of the day, is exceptional. It's stunning, challenging and massive. The UI is such a small part of it. Let's get a bit of perspective people

The perspective you have is of a console gamer. So you favor it and don't mind the changes. Did you just start playing TES? And only did so on the console of your choice?

Your argument is dismissive of PC gamers and their reasons for being unhappy. It isn't HARD to change up the UI for the PC. But they didn't even try. And it's pretty obvious. And saying PC gaming is dying is a false assumption, too. Most MMOs are PC only. And there is just as many PC games out as others these days. Being aware of this fact and keeping the PC market in the loop is a better business decision than alienating them completely, don't you think?

TES games were made popular on PC. They still provide us the construction set and expect US to fix their mistakes and bugs... which is pretty sad in its own way, but I'm not going to complain too much since it allows custom content and a freedom of play that keeps me interested in TES games. Remove that, and I'd rent it... play it for awhile, and then return it. I'd have no reason to buy it. I'd have no interest in it long term. I'd drift away from the game and in the end... stop giving Bethesda money. That's not something they should be aiming for.

I thought the OB menu was poorly designed too.

It just so happens that this one is worse.

Agree with OP.

Whats really funny is they got rid of that so we could rotate frickin nirnroots. Yeah I get that some objects have a puzzle clue on them.. but compared to inanimate objects you will never care to examine.

What is really funny is that anyone interested in inspecting and rotating their carrots and nirnroots would have been happy with an "Inspect" button that pulled up a separate screen.

Why they would trash functionality for that I have no idea.

Oblivion messed up level and loot scaling.

Skyrim fixed that, but broke the UI.

All thanks to Todd Howard's new phobia of things that are too 'spreadsheety' and not streamlined enough.
