Arachnephobia

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 5:57 am

I have one of the worst cases of Arachnephobia :sadvaultboy: , When i see picture of a spider and freak out and have a "small panic attack". I havn't played the residant evil games since I've heard alot of bad things. I don't know what to do with skyrim since I am a Arachnephobe. I've got the Xbox 360 version of the game so I can't download the Mod,also my computer is capable enough to run skyrim.

What Should I Do?

Buy Skyrim for the PC and wait for the appropriate mod to come out, if it's really that bad.

Besides, the game's better for the PC, anyway.

There is a mod out already that replaces spiders with bears.

If you had the PC version I'd say there is actually a mod to change the appearance of spiders in the game... http://youtu.be/6EN8oeXFZWs.

The thing is, that mod is really going to screw things up for spiders. For your case since you are on 360 let me say this... It's a game, the spiders won't come out an attack you ever, you just have to remember that. It's only a video game. Only you can conquer your fear of spiders. Just keep telling yourself "it's just a game". That's about as much advice as we can give you other than don't play the game or quit when you see a spider.

I'm not trying to belittle your condition or make fun of you. But I'd definitely try to stick it out. I mean, you're a human being so are capable of rational thought--deep down you know they're not going to hurt you. I'd play the game and hope that by playing through it that it might help out your case of arachnophobia. I never payed attention in psych class, but something like immersion therapy I think it's called. So maybe this can actually help you.

I have a pretty severe case myself. Whenever I enter a cave and start seeing their webs I have to curse under my breath. Unfortunately I just speed through those particular dungeons killing every one of the things as fast I can. Probably miss out on a lot of loot that way but hey, they had to go with the fantasy cliche of huge spiders.

I have a fear of dragonflies and it doesn't bother me to collect them, although they are very small in-game.
I mean a crippling fear as well, it used to be my mum killing them for me, now it;s my wife
Like someone said just svck it up, I can't imagine being THAT scared.

Oh man...I feel for you :(

I too have bad arachnophobia. In real life I freak out if I even think a spider is in the room.

Fortunately I am still capable of playing the game. I still cringe when I see a spider in Skyrim though...I cringe really bad. They freak me out. Luckily, Im still able to smash them or electricute them or burn them or what not.

But I can understand your dilema. I hope you find a solution.

Possibly, but you know what they say about assumptions. Until the OP says that s/he made a typo, I'll take his words at face value.

I'm in the same boat as you (freaked out by spiders, and unfortunately playing on xbox) - so far I've only done one quest in the game, and it involved a dungeon with some large spiders. The worst moment for me was a room that contained one very large spider...

I am playing a Breton mage, which gave me an advantage in this fight. First I cast "Summon Familiar" - my wolf ran toward the spider and engaged it in battle. While the spider was distracted, I ran around behind it and blasted it with fire. By the time it had killed my wolf and was just starting to turn around to face me, it was dead from my fire spell.

This strategy isn't helpful for dealing with spiders if you're not also playing a mage, but maybe you could get a follower and just let them deal with the spiders you encounter.

I also freaked myself out by testing a "raise dead" spell on it - I actually didn't think it would work on that spider because it was like a boss...and the spell said it would work only on very weak dead monsters. But suddenly the spider rose up. I ran frantically into a small hallway and the spider couldn't follow, so I got brave and started whacking its legs with an iron sword. It started shooting some kind of spell (or webs?) at me so I ran all the way through the passageway to get away from it LOL. B)

i know that feel bro. idunno if there's a name for it, but i have a crippling fear of cockroaches, which is why i couldn't play fo3 for a while. my friend would come over, load up a save, and start tossing the radroach bodies around (in first person) and i'd go ape[censored]. eventually i got over it.. sort of. i still can't play the game in first person anywhere i think there might be radroaches. :b keep telling yourself it's a game, is all the advice i have to give. :/

It would do you a world of good to be educated on a subject before making an ass of yourself.

Yeah, I have a fear of heights and when I'm really high in the air I get really scared to move at all in case my character falls. I would recommend getting that mod that everyone's talking about, that or just simply ignore them. Think of them as bears or something. They aren't the only enemies thankfully. Imagine if you're afraid of the dead? You could never go in dungeons lol!

Turn the sound off when in spider areas this will help a great deal with your problem.

Do the same and get over whatever you're afraid of because there has to be something.

Yeah, it's not that easy.

I agree with Ko-Pile. All fears are mental, and overcoming them is a mental challenge. Get a grip on your sanity and bust some spiders wide open. I don't even like spiders that much, and I will kill one that's in any room I am as soon as I see it. But I'm not going to freak out over a video game.

Well first, i'd change the size of the font you are using and just use regular letters like the rest of us.

But douchebaggery aside, i feel your pain. I've been struggling with Insecta and Arachnophobia for a long time now and i've been pretty antsy (Bad choice of word) about there being spiders in Skyrim. All i can say is the healthiest way to deal with it is to just jump in and shock/stab/shoot the [censored] out of them. It will be difficult, defiantly, but hell, maybe you'll be able to cure yourself!
