Aranea Ienith is hostile, can't start The Black Star quest : V

I took my sweet time finding the Shrine of Azura; I'm level 46 and about 160 hours in. When I approach Aranea Ienith, she becomes hostile before I can even speak with her, and she is "essential", so I can't kill her. I reloaded three times to see if anything would change, to no avail.

I'm not wearing or using any other daedric artifacts, though I do have Mehrune's Razor in my inventory. I've completed about half of the daedric artifact quests, and currently have Boethiah's quest active in my log (not sure if I want to finish it). Could that be what is making Aranea angry? Has anyone else encountered this problem and is there any way to fix it?

Never seen this before, but it could be due to the quests in your journal that are active. Do you have any bounty in the area? Might be worth checking and paying it there is one. Also I would also (just to test) put your razor and any other daedric gear you have on you in storage and retest her response.

go there naked .....and see if she attacks..if she does give it to her ...hope u get the quest in the process...

I have a small bounty in Winterhold (7 gold, accidentally stole a book). I also just completed the civil war, siding with the Imperials. I'll try paying the bounty and finishing Boethiah's quest to see if that makes a difference.

I have Boethiah's quest active as well, and at level 48 just went to the shrine of Azura & had no problems. I haven't started the quest, but I have gotten it assigned. Sorry.

i've had this happen with a different npc during a quest, but they weren't a spell caster. here's how i resolved it:

Drew shield and sword, approached npc, blocked with shield and kept pressing A till they talked to me, exited conversation, sheathed sheild n' sword, and they did the same and became non-hostile.

Not sure how well that will work with spell casters, their kinda hard to get close to to keep tapping A to try to initiate conversation, but it might be worth a shot if all else fails.
