Archery Bow Distance Limit

Post » Tue May 22, 2012 12:39 pm

Over in the gen. discussion side someone else has a similar topic, and there was a post about how to find the upper limits of the draw distance. Locate a stationary guard and walk to him/her until they just come into view ( without zooming in) that is pretty much as far as you can shoot an arrow.

Haha, Carrots, I think that info actually what I posted in THIS forum? Look at my post from 2:41 yesterday. Unless someone had the same method? If you find the general discussion topic link it or something. I'll check it out now. Thanks! Oh and I think both modern and old-school bows have their pros and cons, but I'll take a compound bow any day. Easier to hold drawn at least. From what I understand it took some serious training and muscle to pull a long bow hard enough to get some real distance.

@ McDillard

Ive actually never tried to shoot longer then the draw distance,i'll try that. i also wonder if this problem is a result of the draw distance being screwed with the last patch,i see a difference in draw distance when i remove the updates and put them back in,its real noticeable with items that suddenly pop up next to you that wasnt there 2 seconds ago(i see it most when looking for alchemy plants)

longbow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_longbow

they do not have the stats on a compound bow, due to the adjustability, a compound bows range can change!

Does this topic also include the inability to shoot through gaps in fences/walls? Even Oblivion had this feature.

I HATE, HATE, HATE!

Invisible walls. Why, Bethesda? WHY INVISIBLE WALLS????? :banghead:

The topic didn't specifically include that, but now it does! I have noticed this as well, and it is definitely frustrating. However, it seems like sometimes you can shoot through gaps, and sometimes you cannot. I have definitely shot an arrow through a gap in an unlockable gate, but usually the ones with both horizontal and vertical bars won't work. And I also noticed some odd collisions that deflect arrows when you are shooting down at a sharp angle from a roof. And there is another console-specific glitch that messes up accuracy when in 3rd person view. I have seen arrows fly perfectly straight from 3rd person view on the PC version, but on my xbox, arrows will always drift to the left of the crosshairs when I am in 3rd person. I prefer to aim from 1st person anyway, since it allows you a closer perspective on your target, but it would be nice to have the option.

By the way, I started noticing this archery range limit when I was experimenting with the Slow Time dragon shout. I wanted to hit as many targets as possible in 1 shout, while having all of the arrows still in the air when I was done shooting. This requires level 3 Slow Time, and as much distance as possible from the target. After using the method I posted above to find the range limit, I was able to get off about 5 shots with the elven bow. Since then I tried using the Mystic/Bound Bow, which can fire even faster, and I was just able to get off 6 shots. If you want to see an example, I posted a couple of the Elven Bow experiments on YouTube:

Had to record off of my iphone since I haven't invested in a capture card for the xbox yet, but the quality is pretty decent, especially if you use the HD settings.
