Archery as part of an Unarmed Build

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:03 pm

Yay/Nay? My Unarmed Khajiit Character right now is using Smithing/Enchanting/Heavy Armor (All 3 help boost his Unarmed Damage), he also uses Speech and Lockpicking as they're sort of hard to avoid using, and I'm still unsure about using Sneak/Pickpocket/Alchemy. He's mostly going to punch things in the face for damage, and rely on Shouts as backup. I'm going to rely on Heavy Armor/Smithing/Enchanting to not only boost unarmed damage, but also beef up my resistances against physical and magical damage.

My question is, do you guys think Archery would make sense in a Khajiit Monk type build? I'm not sure whether to use it or not because honestly, I just can't picture it lore wise. But what am I supposed to use to deal damage from far away? It's not like I can fly up to a dragon and punch it their face. (Although that would be quite badass.) I realize Dragonrend will make it much easier to accomplish, but until then I'm not sure if I should use Archery.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks in advanced.

My unarmed Khajiit uses Illusions and Stealth so i have never needed Archery but if you go with no magic it is viable

Sort of defeats the whole idea of 'unarmed' ... Dragons tend to land anyway, you'll just need to wait. If you really want some sort of weapon, I'd go for an iron dagger or perhaps a mace.

Nay, really defeats the purpose of unarmed, which is mean to make you use only your hands :/

You cannot be considered unarmed when wielding a bow.

Yeah, I don't think Archery would make sense much anyway. I think I'm going to just use Shouts as my ranged damage dealers. Besides, against a Dragon, shouting it to death when it's in the sky will feel proper, since they're "verbal debates" or whatever anyway. Then I can PUNCH IT IN THE FACE lol

I would say no. I am thinking about making an Unarmed Argonian but I've just made another mage so I probably won't at least not for a while.

It's loads of fun. I'm going to focus on collecting some shouts as well, to spice things up, because only unarmed combat can get boring fast. The kill-cams are just so epic that you forget that there is no unarmed skill in the game, though. I still can't believe they removed the skill in the transition from Oblivion to Skyrim, it's a shame.

The thing I hate about Skyrim's unarmed is the Power Attack. Especially the Dual Power Attack, you flail your arms like a 5 year old would do in a fight, and the screen shakes way too much in first-person view. I usually end up playing unarmed characters in third-person only solely due to that. Not to mention you can't block whatsoever, that's the worst part about it.

True but at least it looks fluid rather than the robot-looking version in OB. Although being able to Disarm or knock down your enemy would be great in Sky

That's like saying you're not an archer if you back yourself up with a dagger.

Yeah I agree. I thought it over and I realized it would ruin the whole point of the build. Shouts and maybe a mage/archer follower can handle anything at a range long enough for you to run in and start throwing punches. Archery (or destruction) wouldn't really make sense for the lore-friendly build I'm going for.

The title of this topic is a oxymoron. Its like sharp but dull.

I was in New Zealand one time and there is a shop. The name of the shop is 'Steep but Cheap.' I cannot forget that. I think it was in Queenstown. I don't know its still there or not.

The same people that are telling you you cant use unarmed with bows are the same people that use daggers with mage toons. I like to use mostly close range combat but i like to make sure I have a long range attack as well just incase. It's ultimately up to you how you want to go into a combat situation but if you dont have a little but of variety in your attacks the baddies will always have the edge.

Oh, I know. I can do whatever I like, it's not like it matters to anybody but me. The Khajiit I'm playing is a Monk trained in the arts of the Whispering Fang. That's his backstory. The only question I had was whether or not Archery would be lore-friendly to that, as I too agree with you in making sure I have some form of ranged attack. However, it doesn't seem very lore friendly so I think I'm going to stick to Shouts alone as my ranged attacks. This is just a character I play occasionally to spicen things up anyway, not a main one, so it should be fine.

Thanks for your help though!

My unarmed Khajiit mercenary used heavy armour only. It was so exciting I stopped playing at lvl 5.
I killed the first dragon though.
