RP was always such a broad term. And with the explosion of RP inspired games into mainstream the concept of role Play lost meaning to me several years ago. Some groups I have played with actually stage Role Play events. An example of this is; One day I was asked to take off all my gear, dress in plain street clothes and go into a NPC prison cell. I was sgt in my guild and the RP scenario was to organize a unit to come rescue me. They also had to escort me out of the prison area and back to home turf when I had almost nothing gear wise except a spare rifle one of the guys gave me. That was fun enough but I really don't have much patience for stuff like that, and even less for hanging out in a bar making toasts and celebrating every wed night.
I saw someone using the term Lore Player a couple of years ago and I identified with that more than Role Player. Sure I used to play AD&D back in the day and I have belonged to some fairly deep RP guilds, but I base my gameplay around the Lore of the game I am playing. I embrace the ruleset that the developers created in the world they envisioned and I just try and stick with it, leaving the meta gaming and mathematics out of it as much as possible. For me that creates a nice environment that takes full advantage of all the good stuff devs put into the game. But at the same time it keeps me free of the outside influences that heavy rp guilds try and impose overtop of the games mechanics.
More like "going with the natural flow of the game rather than trying to define a whole new river in the midst of a sea of non believers" if that makes sense to anyone.
