Are High Elves treated any differently in Skyrim?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 2:40 pm

Even though npcs may hate other npcs due to their race, they tend to ignore the player's race entirely. It's funny sometimes. I had an altmer in Markarth explain to my wood elf what a wood elf was. Just today a redguard told my redguard character about her homeland as if I'd never heard of it. So no, npcs treat altmer pcs like nords, aside from some greetings when they'll call you "elf"

Yeah a few lines of dialogue changed to suit the different races would have been a huge benefit in my opinion.

Nords in Skyrim are bullys, they treat only the races that have little power with disrespect, and leave the rest be. You will find that there is little change at all outside generic NPC greetings.

In Morrowind I played a wood elf and a dark elf. The difference with the dark elf was extraordinary. People called me muthsera or sera, and were generally cordial. When I played a wood elf, it was "We're watching you scum!"

Then you're memory is short. How you were treated in Morrowind depended on your reputation mostly. Dunmer we're treated just as bad at the start of the game, and we're paradoxically addressed as outlander. The difference being when your rep was high, they welcomed you under sun and sky.

Yes but race effected your rep and by extension how other races treated you. There was a relatively complex, lore based system for how different races would treat you by default. For example, wood elves usually hate khajiit and vice-versa. It was an interesting mechanic that breathed a little life into the races, even if it made little difference in the end. I thought this would be expanded in Skyrim...not scrapped like so many other things.

Oh and I just encountered another glaring plot hole regarding people ignoring your race. I'm playing my redguard female and did the quest "in my time of need". I figured the alik'r, who have been interrogating EVERY redguard female they see, would at least say SOMETHING to me, but instead they don't even realize I'm a redguard. It would he hilarious if it wasn't so embaressing

I'd not quote me on this but i'm sure i read in lore somewhere, even within the Dominion many people disagree with them, often they have kidnapped people on roads within places like Morrowind and made them join. As said before, the Dominion is a ruling body and not a race or the view of everyone they rule. I like to think of them in some way like Nazi Germany. Maybe DLC will give us a better insight into how it all works.

And yet the pc's elf character doesn't experience any of this, because apperently the dominion thinks everyone's player is a nord. Yet another issue here. I was honestly expecting the thalmor to at least have some different dialogue if I was an altmer. Maybe berade me becsuse I was a "traitor" or something. Also, I don't think dark elves are even allowed in the aldmeri dominion. Dark elves are traditionally viewed as pariahs by "true mer". I dont think the non-imperialized bosmer or altmer would want anything to do with them.

Basically this.

It really gets kind of weird sometimes, and really annoying.

Wait....my non-khajiit characters get called smoothskin BY KHAJIIT! Why would khajiit get called that by other people? This whole thing is just mixed up. Regardless, I was hoping race-related things like this would be improved upon for Skyrim, but it seems like they've been watered down.....
