Are Khajiit Egyptian?

Post » Fri Jun 29, 2012 12:52 pm

I was working on my never ending quest to fine cool pics of khajiits. [if you know of any please post :) ] I find this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastet I wonder if Elsweyr is based on Egypt? What do you all think?

IIRC it is a desert region, but i dont think its specifically egyption themed. Maybe their "ancient khajiit" crypts are.

no, elsweyr is based on elsweyr. realm world corilations do not always have to exist, ya know? the only thing that is even similar (Afaik) is the fact that it is a desert

Not really. Just look at the list of Khajiit "Breeds".

They range from housecats to warcats, and from near-human to the Suthay-Raht you see in Morrowind. They're all considered "Khajiit" and they all are sentient.

Besides, it's a stretch to call Khajiit "Egyptian" because two Egyptian goddesses share a superficial resemblence to them (Bast and Sekhmet.) When we go to Elswyer, it may have some Egyptian themes, though, in the design of certain buildings or tombs.

They have many real life influences. They aren't exclusive to one thing. The northern part of Elsweyr is the desert region. The southern part is the rain forest and swamp region. The deserts have the nomads while the southern part has more cities and permanently settled areas.

It's debatable if Morrowind's Khajiit were of any Raht variant. The raht variants are often bigger than the non-raht variants. The Morrowind Khajiit seem to be more like they are just Suthay. We see the suthay-raht in Oblivion and Skyrim.

also, there are a lot of nomads that sale items to people .. aka skyrim khajiit caravans .. I am not saying all of it has to be Egyptian base, but at least a (small or tiny) part of it is?

A lot of Northern Elsweyr has warlike tribes. The Southern part is where the caravans and merchants come from most likely due to that part having tons of mercantile traditions.

It's similar to Egypt the same way Skyrim is similar to Scandinavia. It's geography and nothing else. The only races that are based heavily on existing civilizations are the Men races of Nord, Breton, Redguard, and Imperial. Maybe Argonians in a sense of stereotypical witchdoctors.

Looking around the net, here are some other people's ideas on the topic

1) Khajiit = ancient Egyptians (live in desert, Egypt's cat culture, were in Tamriel before others)
2) The Khajiit I see possibly like India / Persia due to them being like tigers, their names and the fact they live in jungle & dessert which is like India / Persia.
3) Khajiit = Egyptian/Arab mix - even though Elsywer is a jungle of some sort

Looks like I am the only one thinks this....

Arabs. Desert region country, nomadic trading caravans... And if that doesn't give it away, the Arabic accents and linguistic mannerisms should.

If there are indeed real-world influences behind the general design of Khajiit, it seems to be a bit of Indian, bit of Persian, bit of Egyptian, bit of Arabian, and maybe even a pinch of Indochinese. I would love to see some of their architecture, and some of the native Elsweyr garb.

I could definitely see them building more Egyptian and Arabian-style buildings in the deserts (maybe not pyramids, but temples), and maybe something like http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/79/Khajuraho5.jpg in the jungles.

Also, since Elsweyr was once separated into two separate kingdoms, one in the northern desert, the other in the southern jungles, it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable that they had two distinct cultures.

Edit: Omigosh! I just realized that the Sphinx is actually a statue of a Khajiit..... :teehee:

I see Khajiit as a mix of Middle Eastern cultures, with all of the difference kinds of enviroment that are in Elsweyr.

The Spinx is a Khajiit that lost its nose and now will die of not breathing. Or being a giant rock. Oh my god, a giant rock!

I was hoping Elder Scrolls V was in Elsweyr, but they must be saving the best for last.

I'd say they would be saving Blackmarsh for last since it has the whole worm ride underwater and stuff.

I'll put money on it being stupid Summerset or "Alinor". Mark my words. I really hope it isn't though... Would they even do Elswyr justice with they way Beth butchers the lore nowadays? Especially with a unique, more Morrowind like province...
