Public computers should never be used for anything close to personal info. Logging into a forum should be fine, but logging onto your bank account is a no-no. As well as any site that requires the use of your Social Security number.

If you don't mind the chance someone will log your password and use your email... Sure.

Using two-factor authentication (Password + a pass code received via text message), checking your email is ok-ish on public computers. Don't read any messages with private/personal information though as most modern software-based keyloggers also use screen capturing.

Gmail and Hotmail/Windows Live Mail offer two-factor authentication. Don't think any of the other free ones do.

http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows-live/sign-in-single-use-code (not two-factor authentication, but will still keep your account secure)

I pretty much agree. Just accept that your time with the Internet has run its course.

Defon has linked you to the required information on how to enable it above. It's still not something I'd risk however.

I've never had a good experience with public computers. I logged into my email on one of my local library's computers and the next day it was hacked into and was sending out pormo site information to all my contacts. Could've been a coincidence but I highly doubt that.

I did make sure I logged off before I left, but didn't clear the history. If you use one and you can access the history I would suggest doing that. But I'd stay away from usig public computers for internet as much as you can.

Don't you need it for school?

My kid is six and needs the internet for school already..

If it's a money issue tell her you'll do chores around the house to help pay for it..

Anywho, use http://www.hushmail.com/ if working from public terminals, since that's what it was programmed for

Dude.. I'm pushing the ripe old age of 'ancient' and I'm still learning -doing an online course in C#(*)

what about using the internet to look for work? Here in the Netherlands they almost make it mandatory to have a PC/internet to be able to look for work, sign in to the unemployment office, email with your employment coach at said unemployment office, work on a resumé, that you need to send around and post online, again, all work searching related.

or did she catch you DL'ing xxx materials? In which case.. yup, you're burned

until about a year ago i was only able to access the internet via library.

basicly, your biggest concern should be how it is you will schedule all your online business to one hour at the computer per day, if you can get a reservation before all the slots are filled.

If you had a laptop you could go slum at a local Starbucks. Just buy a cheap coffee to keep them from getting suspicious. :shifty:

Why not install an anti-keylogger if you're afraid of the bad guys?

The short answer is: No, they are not secure. Neither is open WLAN (like you can find at some restaurants and similar places).

What I do is to take my laptop to an open WLAN, then start a secure, encrypted OpenVPN tunnel to my server and use that tunnel to transmit all information, including even DNS queries (so the server names I access can't be manipulated).

The tunnel is cryptographically secured, so if anyone tries to mess with it at any point, it'll just break down and inform me about the attempt, so I can go to some other location.

Unless you don't care, yes they're secure.
If you care about security, then no they ain't.

Really though what else beside a forum/Facebook/Twitter password are you looking to put on there because anything with financial or personal (like health records) attatchments should be excluded from the list of accessible sites/information.

- in my library half the sites I regularly visit are blocked anyway because, well, you're at a library supposedly to study not go on forums/games but hey maybe that's just here.

Yeah, it's silly removing forums and such other related websites. When I'm in the library, I want to use the internet as I please (with some obvious restrictions, of course), as long as I don't disturb anyone.

But I use my phone's internet anyway, so it's not even a problem.
