Are there any mental conditions that do this?

Post » Fri Aug 02, 2013 6:58 pm

This may sound like a weird question, but I'm involved in a role-playing game with some friends. Anyway, long story short, I'm creating a character and want someone who's a bit...weird and crazy. But, in a funny, lighthearted way, and not something that's rather miserable like depression. Does anyone know of some conditions like that? I know that no mental conditions are laughing matters, but...well...you get my idea...

A condition that might have a slightly humorous or lighthearted affect in a role-play situation. Like, a pyromaniac who sets fire to everyone in his party's possessions. Something like that, but more unique?

EDIT: What accent sounds the most crazy?

Your probably looking more for Eccentricities. At their core, some, not all, are symptoms of mental health issues. But since the person is harmless or appealing, then no one takes no offense at their actions.

Also, the character you described is somewhat of a sociopath, in that they are not aware, or do not care, about how their actions affect others. This does not mean evil, just someone who does not have empathy with others.

The people I'm doing it with want real world conditions. Or, not even conditions as such, but maybe even just a personality flaw. Something that makes him maybe a little weird and crazy, but in a funny sort of way.

I want them to have empathy and feelings for people. Maybe someone who's a little...I dunno...

Maybe someone who's just incredibly laid back and sits their cracking jokes, even when they're dying like?

Or maybe someone who gets violent?

Sounds like all the characters from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mania side in Shivering isles. All crazy but lighthearted and energetic/optimistic.

That is exactly what sort of style I'm going for! Brilliant way of describing it. I want someone who is crazy, but not in a horrible, keep away from me kind of way. More like Sheogorath and those out of Shivering Isles. They're crazy, but in a lovable, lighthearted and optimistic way.

Other than Bi-Polar or Schizophrenia or MPD (multiple personality disorder) your going to have attribute these mannerisms to their upbringing. Perhaps a permissive parenting style run amuck, so no consequences for their screw ups and no filters for what they say when they were growing up, so they have no sense of what is appropriate.

Sheogorath is crazy in a horrible, keep away from me way. He just comes across as much more endearing in a video game than he would in real life.

I know he's creepy still. But, what I mean is, he's not going around depressed and stuff. Like, if you had to play as him or someone who suffers with depression, you know playing as him would be more fun. Also, I'm not on about that crazy. He is like the lord of madness, after all.

I'm on about someone who suffers with constant mania. What's the name for this?

Actually, there is hypomania. It's basically just below mania, so a little bit more calmer. It can be permanent, if the causes are constantly applied. Causes can be little things like not sleeping or whatever.

Anyway, I've sorted that out now, so don't worry. I need an accent. What country's accent do you think suits a crazy person best?

FInding Nemo made short term memory lost kind of amusing in parts, while also being kind of serious about it.

That Isaac Newton sure was a wacky fellow.

Objectum sixual. While this is not exactly a mental disorder, it could be amusing having your character say some mushy things to some random rock he/she carries in his/her pocket. :P

I don't like the sound of them their "boncentration bamps". :D

Once in G.U.R.P.S. I took an advantage that gave me bonuses whenever I took an action that the DM considered reckless. Then I took a disadvantage that did not allow me to pass up chances to take reckless action. Endless amusemant by players and endless frustration by DM was caused by this.

Well I myself tend to feel a bit depressed during winter, and then at the start of summer I just feel this endless feeling of joy and I'll go around happy pretty much no matter what. Maybe your character could have something like that if the campaign is happening early during summer. Be that one smiling character when all the others are sarcastically saying "well at least it can't get any worse". Not sure what it falls under though, maybe SAD, not sure, never been tested so I can't say for certain why I act this way, I just feel it's a little nutty at times. In a fun way. :P

I'm lucky I'm not constricted to real mental conditions in my group as we are going to be playing fantasy GURPS. Gonna make a character (if the DM allows it) with a curse where it takes 1 point of damage (no saves) if it says the letters "L" or "J" so I'll have to be careful about how I construct my sentences. As a low health character the wrong sentence might even kill my character.

+1. Seriously, that would be frickin' hilarious. :P

Then again, I shouldn't be talking. I've been suspecting that I might have Tourettes. But I doubt it. But I don't doubt it.

Actually, no. Hypomania has a downside, just like full mania. It is basically the same thing, only without psychosis (loosing touch with reality; hallucination or/and delusions). There is no such thing as a free lunch high. The closest you could perhaps get is cyclothymia, where the depression is subclinical (but still exists).

Spoiler
Qualifications: None, but have read up on the topic since I was diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder type II years ago.

As an alternative, I suggest a sugar junkie; allows you to have your character be hyper, creates RP opportunities (*party defeats village-molesting monster with hoard of weapons, armour... and foodstuff* "Dibs on the cake!!!" *Runs off and starts stuff face while rest of party searches for the fattest lute*), and a well placed sugar coma has humour potential.

EDIT:

Given that you're constantly bringing up yourself and 'weird' things about you, I'd say no.

Pretty much. With disorders like bi-polar disorder, the necessity is that there are periods of extreme lows if the condition isn't treated. If you're trying to make it similar to real life (and I don't really see why you'd want to...it's a fantasy role-playing game), you'd have to offset the periods of extreme highs with ones of extreme lows.

Easy you want to give the poor smuck ocd, add, tourettes and just for kicks schizophrenic delusions and mild epilepsy an you wont be able to get anything done but it will be funny when during getting attacked your add kicks in an you wander off in your head then your ocd as you count the number of bullet wounds then your epilepsy has the grenades start going off an finishing off with a great big f you delusion has you start talking to santa clause.

Seriously though id not go with any off them for the fact that has you said their no laughing matter an the only times they are is when the suffering is laughing at themselfs

Various OCDs would easily fall into that category.

I don't think I've ever played a character that didn't have an OCD. OCDs are too much fun.
