Art?

Post » Mon May 27, 2013 10:34 am

I checked the last 7 pages or so.. If there's already a topic I apologize.

I only recently started appreciating visual art coincidentally after I went off of medication this year  but I feel incredibly ignorant and I know this forum is filled with tasteful cool people.

I was wondering about people's favourites and such? I just found out yesterday that Jackson Pollock is awesome.

I just sort of want to know what's out there and where to begin my journey :D

I love the works of Egon Schiele and Georges Barbier.

Pretty much anything in Jugend magazine.

I can tell you who I don't like, Andy Warhol. Also, most modern art is crap IMHO.

Modern art

Crap

Is it

Edit: one opinion on Pollock made me laugh. something like "1. This is clearly some hippy trying to pass off some scribbles as modern art and 2. I can't take my eyes off it"

IMHO, yes

The beauty of art is that it is entirely subjective.

I actually quite like modern art, when you remove the pretension from it. I love looking at it and abstracting what it means to me; there are a lot of muddled pieces that'll make me think of a carnival or of rain and after studying abstraction in architecture school, I found a new appreciation for modern art, which works off of abstractions as inspiration.

Favourite artists? Oh, I like a little bit of everything- Vincent van Gogh, Alphonse Mucha, Brian Froud, um,..... can't think of any other names off hand right now. :hehe:

I appreciate classical as well as newer art; pop art is a little... iffy I'll admit though.

I've gone to one art show and it was pretty cool. Of course, here I am this raggedy kid surrounded by the middle-aged and up, not old enough to hold a glass of wine in my hand. Nonetheless, I had a good time and found some really clever art. It was there that I finally broke my negative disposition toward abstract art. I found myself staring into a piece imagining all sorts of things, and with those imaginings came emotions, which is what I think art is all about. Emotion. It was a different experience than googling cool images, that's for sure.

Some of my favorite artwork has to be the stuff in Paradox games, especially Crusader Kings 2. There's something authentic about the images that I just don't get from most other depictions of the medieval ages. One piece of art in particular has stuck with me, though, and that's the http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/Peter_Paul_Rubens_Massacre_of_the_Innocents.jpg by Rubens (warning: partial nudity, violence). What I see in this picture is a pragmatic depiction of society, where the strong can and do exert their strength on the weak. It's a harsh reality, and even with their superior strength, they'll still don armor and wield a blade to maximize their authority. It's sad, and I think many of us can relate to both sides in the picture, whether or not we'd like to admit it -- or see it that way (as they are killing children).

Well, this will certainly be an interesting discussion. Looking forward to it. :D

Jackson Pollock...yeah.

Anyway, I recomend starting with history and moving forward, and not paying heed to such distinctions as high art and commercial art, etc. It's all art. Except Jackson Pollock.

I don't pay any attention to anything except what I see.

I don't really want the thread to turn into a "this is art and this isn't" thread because they're embarrassing to read.

But I will read up thanks

And yeah I should get out of the house more Porc

And those engravings at the Antique Mall.... I would love to buy but they price them at $600

I don't like abstract/modern art when it is at the expense of skill (then again I don't know a whole lot about painting from a technical point of view). A lot of modern art looks like someone spewed paints on a canvas, or it's just a dot in the middle of a blank canvas. That's just stupid in my opinion, but Salvador Dali on the other hand, I can see that a lot of effort went into his paintings and they look like a lot of technique went into creating them, I also like those really old court paintings that look almost photographic, it's amazing that people could do that with just paint and brushes, and yet, most of those people are anonymous in modern culture, whereas Andy Warhol is a household name.

I used to have some great Giger posters but sold them when short of money - now they're almost unobtainable. Sigh.

It's strange how few of his works are available as either prints or posters although http://www.kunsthauswien.com/shop/exhibition/poster-spell.html?___store=en&___from_store=en would be cool to have.

Maybe I'm wrong? Or maybe he did both. I'm not completely sure.

I saw a calender with his art on sale for like 2 dollars in 2008. I probably should have got it, although I was already almost half way through the year.
