ArtifactsFlickering on NPCs and Weapons Phantom Weapon Parts

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 6:30 pm

So, I started out with the ATI 11.9 drivers for my Radeon HD 6950. I have the Steam version, so I automatically started off with no cache folder. So I created that, reconfigured my desktop shortcut to point to it and I installed the latest (10/4) Rage Performance driver. After doing all that, I finally had a damn playable game with negligible texture pop-in that seems inherent to the engine. I cranked the anti-aliasing up to full strength and maintained 60 frames per second the whole time. In short, the game was a blast! This is easily the most immersive game I think I've ever played.

Then I arrived in the first town and noticed that several NPCs seem to have glitched or artifacting animations. The mayor has minor problems, the guard next to the front gate seems to glitch standing still and the Asian Outfitter shopkeeper seems to glitch continually. Although, to his credit, he has a very awesome hat. The glitches and artifacting seem to only happen during certain animations and seem consistent. When they happen on some characters, like the guard, he just sits there and blinks. However, other characters, like the shopkeep and the mayor, it almost appears as if the character is temporarily teleporting to the wrong spot in the scene. Aside from the affected NPCs, I haven't noticed ANY other graphical glitches, including with other NPCs. Now that I think of it, it only seems to happen with NPCs that you can "converse" with. By this, I mean NPCs that can give quests or act as a vendor. The rest seem to work fine.

I am running an AMD X4 64 bit 2.8 GHz with an MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III and 4 GB of RAM. I was hoping we could pool our information and figure out what's causing this. For those having this SPECIFIC problem, does anyone have any ideas for fixes? Also, if you're having this issue, please post your system specs. Heck, if you're not having the problem, post your specs anyways. Maybe together we could figure out how to solve this. :)

That looks like it. My Coffer doesn't always look like that, however. My artifacting is fleeting - it only happens for a moment or two before returning to normal for a few seconds. I can't remember my launch options (I'm at work right now). But I followed the advice of a post in this forum to create my texture cache directory and then I used a launch option to point Rage at the folder that I had just created. it was a fairly simple fix. I'll edit this reply when I get home and paste in the launch option.

Yes. I'm right here. :)

I have not had that problem. As I said, it only seems to occur with NPCs (non playable characters).

My Wellspring NPCs flash black very quickly, and it doesn't stop. This only began once I entered Wellspring, and I don't believe it affects the other NPCs in the game so far. I haven't had any artifacting like that screenshot of Coffer, fortunately.

Ok, I did the fixes listed in the sticky, and it COMPLETELY solved my texture pop-in. More than I could have expected. However, I'm getting NPCs artifacting all over the place - even more so now. I feel like this and the MBTV bug are what the devs need to be addressing at this point.

Installed this. Had problems due to ATI card. Got hotfix driver. Things mostly ran fine -- some texture pop-up, but that didn't much bother me. Then I get to Wellspring, and some characters (including some very important ones) act weird when viewed from the front close up. Their animations seem to skip and behave stuttery at times, and more bizarrely, they'll occasionally flash over for a split second to being stretched at bizarre diagonals or squashed to having lost about a third of their height. It's distracting at best.

Today was the first time playing since Oct 3. I played for about an hour or two, returned to a previously cleared area (Ghost Hideout) and after using a Lock Grinder to open a locked door and retrieve the "Ghost Pistol" collector card, I suddenly had a "ghost pistol" of my own.

I'm pretty sure this is a glitch and not an easter egg relating to the ghost pistol collector card.

When the pistol is equipped, a phantom cylinder floats in the air a few inches away from the gun. If I switch to shotgun or sniper rifle, a different type of bullet appears in a similar location:

occasionally with the pistol there are other floating gun parts as well: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/558669913713014655/610179C7464B3F909996D0789BAFF4E679064DCC/

I recently installed the Oct 4 AMD driver update and added the following Steam launch options:

+cvaradd g_fov 20 +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +set com_allowConsole 1 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024 +ik_enablesmoothing 0 +image_usecompression 0 +jobs_numthreads 4 +mem_phymemblocksizem 3072 +m_smooth 0 +m_rawinput 1

My Catalyst Control Center options were as follows:

AA: Use application settings
AF: Use application settings
Tessellation: AMD Optimized
Catalyst A.I.: Advanced (note: "Disable" checkbox was left unchecked)
Mipmap Detail Level: Max Quality
Wait for vertical referesh: Closer to Perfomance (about 3/4 toward performance and away from Quality)
AA mode: Max Performance

I did not use any rageconfig.cfg file. Perhaps one of the Steam launch options is conflicting with my Catalyst settings?

specs:
i7-820QM 1.73GHz (3.06GHz turbo)
1GB AMD 5830m (running at stock clocks)
16GB DDR3 RAM
1920x1080 display

ATI driver issue as i think Doom 3 had a glitch like this on ATI way back..

I'm experiencing the same issue first with the settler pistol having phantom gun parts, phantom bullets and then when I reached Wellspring some of the NPCs flickered from light to dark randomly.

What is everyone's setting for Catalyst A.I.?

Prior to installing the Oct 4 driver I believe I used Disable Catalyst A.I. or I had it set to standard. Before playing this time, when I experienced this glitch, I changed the Catalyst A.I. to "Advanced"

I will try a few different settings to see if this fixes it.

EDIT:

I tested this in Wellspring walking around and looking at various NPCs. The problem seems to occur when NPCs are in a shadow area that is relatively close to a brightly lit area. If they are completely in shadow or completely in sunlight, the effect doesn't seem to happen on Standard or Advanced Catalyst A.I. settings.

Disabling Catalyst A.I. makes this problem much, much worse. The result looks like the very blocky texture artifacts some others have reported, not only on NPCs but also on terrain and corridors.

Standard Catalyst A.I. and Advanced Catalyst A.I. seems to have the same exact effect, perhaps it is slightly better with Advanced Catalyst A.I. setting.

Yes, I had a feeling that pic was from setting Catalyst A.I. to disabled. I never experienced anything like that but before when I tried turning my Catalyst A.I. to disabled, suddenly there were blocky artifacts in Wellspring.

If there is a difference between the "Standard" Catalyst A.I. setting and the "Advanced" Catalyst A.I. setting it must be subtle, in terms of the artifacting on NPCs and weapons. Perhaps the "Advanced" is slightly less artifacting?

In your case, since you experienced a crash when turning Catalyst A.I. on, you might try either Advanced or Standard to see if one of those is better than the other.

funny thing is with the rage performance driver, it runs really smooth , but i have these tiles everywhere, on NPC`s, world, guns , vehicles etc etc.
but when i have Battlefield 3 preview driver installed, it doesn't have these artifacts, but then frame-rate is really low, its is kinda playable but more like fast picture slide.
