Arvel The Swift's Voice Changed

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 2:41 pm

For those who have seen the gameplay demos presented by Todd Howard, the part where Arvel is tangled up in webs and we clearly hear that the dark elf has a raspy voice. Well I just watched a video with the same part and it seems Bethesda has the changed the voice for Arvel and he sounds more human. A little disappointing if you ask me. Anyone else see this video I'm talking about?

I heard that, too :( Its Oblivion all over again!

(for those who don't know what I mean, in the demos for Oblivion the Dunmer had the raspy voice and they for some reason changed it for release...looks like they did the same thing for Skyrim *bitter sigh*)

We all knew that the voices used in the demo were placeholders. It was a little surprising at first, hearing his different voice, but I'll get over it.

Remember that it's not like there's only one voice for Dark Elves now. There's every chance that Arvel's voice actor is still in the game, only that they ditched him for Arvel.

Search for the other thread about this, I made a pretty solid point that a few people agreed with.

Short Summary:

I played at PAX, seen two Dunmer on a pilgrimage, one had a raspy voice the other didn't
we have 70 voice actors, It won't be like Oblivion.
Possible that he grew up in Skyrim and had a Nordic parent thus adjusting to the accent and his name doesn't really sound like a Dunmer name.

36 Lessons of Vivec, Sermon 10 seems to indicate that the raspy voice is a cultural thing rather than a physiological one. Boethiah commanded the Chimer to change themselves to be different from the much-scorned Altmer. "Pitch your voices the color of bruise" and whatnot.

So some being raspy and some not makes sense, to a degree. I hope the Dunmer male PC has a raspy voice.

What was wrong with his old voice, I thought it was perfect, it fit his character perfectly, what a shame it was changed.

Why did they change it x.x its not like there where any complaints against it or anything, there weren't any uprisings or riots as far as I could tell.

I actually really like his new voice, in fact, a lot of the Nord voices are great. They all sound Scandinavian/Danish and more local to Skyrim.

I don't remember the voices in Morrowind being that obnoxious (the pre-change voice from the previews) but maybe it's just been too long.

Haven't heard the new Arvel yet. Don't tell me they replaced the cool raspy male Dunmer voice with that fruity one from Oblivion that all the elves had! Not again! :cryvaultboy:

Not as bad, but definitely very human-like.
