ATI PERFORMANCE FIX (possibly NVIDIA too)

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 3:03 pm

So hello there gents, after messing around with all the settings in game and also the .ini for what seemed like hours the results just made no sense.I practically was getting the same FPS on low as ultra and aside from that it didnt look as good as it should have at all.

I came across this thread a moment ago and after doing exactly the same as suggested im running at a smooth 50-60fps and it looks AMAZING (also this fixes the shadow problem)

Rather than set the gfx options through skyrim itself do it through CCC and you should see a massive difference in quality and performance.

I assume nvidia cards have a similar frontend for changing gfx settings on the card rather than in game and if so can you let me know if this helps you!!

IF THIS DOES HELP YOU GIVE THE THREAD A BUMP TO KEEP IT AT THE TOP :D

HOPE THIS HELPS THIS GAME IS BEAUTIFUL

Love love and more love,

I haven't updated my drivers yet but set up something similar and now get a stable 30fps in towns. It could be better but at least it's playable now.

Where is that page within the CCC? I can't seem to find it and you covered up all the names with the giant arrows and whatnot. :P

It's under the tab named "Gaming", and then just click on the following one.

Edit: Btw, I'm using advanced view.

Hmm well I gave this a whirl and set everything exactly as you showed in the pictures, but for some reason my game turned into a slideshow. It was unplayable. I reset the CCC defaults and clicked the master Ultra button on the Skyrim settings without altering anything else, and when I loaded back up, it was running at normal frame rates again. Not sure why, but the fix actually had the opposite effect for me.

Go to desktop, right click, choose Catalyst Control Center. If it isn't a short cut on its own, go to your control panel or settings and choose 'display settings' and go to advanced, should be there IIRC depending on OS.

Also my performance before this is pretty good, going to try it and see if it makes much of a difference.

Alternately, if it's like my computer, it's under AMD VISION Engine Control Center. It's the exact same thing, just a different name. All the windows are identical to those in the article. Figured I'd point that out if anyone has a similar setup to mine.

I tried this on my NVIDIA GTX 560M - Drivers are 285.79.

I put in the following settings under the NVIDIA control panel

Anisotropic filtering - 16x
Antialiasing Mode - Enhance the application setting
Antialiasing Setting - 8x
Texture filtering Anisotropic sample optimization - Off
Texture filtering Negative LOD bias - Clamp
Texture filtering Quality - Quality
Texture filtering Trilinear optimization - On
Vertical sync - Force off

This was based on the closest that I could find between the ATI and NVIDIA. It worked for me the first dragon was unplayable as the game was running to poorly to fight him. after making these changes I saw a big improvement in the game play.

No no, I know how to open the CCC. But WITHIN that, I cannot find the page with these settings.

Okay; first impression, now I'm getting mouse weirdness - my up/down movement is way slower than my left/right turns. That wasn't happening before.

I am getting a slideshow too.

Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
OS Service Pack Service Pack 1
DirectX DirectX 11.0
CPU Type QuadCore Intel Core i7-875K, 3200 MHz (24 x 133)
Motherboard Name Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (3 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 2 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR3 DIMM, Audio, Gigabit LAN)
Motherboard Chipset Intel Ibex Peak P55, Intel Lynnfield
System Memory 8183 MB (DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM)
GPU 1 AMD Radeon HD 6870
GPU 2 AMD Radeon HD 6870 (Crossfire can be enabled if needed.)
Audio Adapter Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio Sound Card
Speakers Logitech Speaker System Z906
Monitor 1 Sceptre X226W-1920 [22" LCD]
Monitor 2 Sceptre X226W-1920 [22" LCD]
Controller X360 Controller

I am seeing a lot better textures though. I just need to get it to stop lagging. Any ideas on how to stop this slideshow?

So now you're caught up to me at least. :)

I'm not having any critical frame rate issues, but I am experiencing that weird vertical-only mouse-look sluggishness. One thread I read somewhere in here said there was a connection between FPS and the vertical mouse-look (and *only* vertical; horizontal doesn't seem affected, and horizontal is also the only thing that IS affected if you change the look sensitivity in the gameplay settings).

Didn't fix anything, in fact it made it even worse. Although that was to be expected, in the guide you're basically forcing as much AA and AF as you can have, making the game even more of a slideshow.

Not sure why it works for some but not others. I'm like you two - it made it far worse for me, and I had to switch back.

I am about to try installing the 11.9 drivers instead of the 11.10 ones I have now. I will post results.

Doh, I just uninstalled 11.9 to see if the newer ones worked better.

11.9 did squat. I need this guess I will go through each of the CCC settings until it runs smooth again.
