Auto aim and aim assistance:what is the difference?

I don't understand what is the different between the two. Did you turn them off? And if not how much assistance dis you put? The default is 100 which means full. I'm wondering if turning those options off makes the combat more challenging or maybe makes it less fun and fluid... Anyone experimented with those settings enough? And a good word for the developers- it's really refreshing to play a game so customizable that let's you tweak every single HUD and gameplay element, great job there!

I think one is where it will aim dirrectly at the enemy and the other one kinda tracks them with the cursor. I find it helpfull but im gonna turn it off on my very hard playthrough.
