[RELWIP] Automatic Variants - Thread 5

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 10:27 am

Regarding save game corruption, evidently it is related to the new Papyrus scripting and the fact that script info is often saved in the save game file. Therefore, even if a plugin is deactivated, the script info still exists in the save. Trying to "clean save" won't change the fact that script info is in the save, so it still causes problems.

This is something to be aware of for ALL mods, not just AV or other patchers. I've posted extensively about it elsewhere because I have always adopted the stance of starting new games fresh rather than feeling that I can change things on the fly. Some other players evidently got used to being able to do the latter with varying degrees of success in prior games. That won't work anymore, so be warned.

Shouldn't there be a way to create a "patcher" of sorts that cross references your scripts that should be loaded into a game against whats in your actual save file and then either remove the scripts that should no longer be in the save file or create a counter to them so that they are in a since void?

So, a quick couple of posts with Arthmoor, the facial data is all done outside of the NPC record. It's stored as a file. In the CK, you do a ctrl-f4 to export the facial data with a dup'd NPC, and here it'll have to do the same, copy the facial data and rename it or something for it to work properly.

Sad, but another workaround needed. :(

Well that's a smart system.

So people have to pass around esp files, script files, and now NPC face files?

Scripts being outside esps seem fairly useless, as what custom mod is going to share scripts with another mod that isn't from the same author? Why would you need a centralized location for scripts when usually only one mod is going to point to them? If that one author wants to update his script, he can just update the esp. Seemed to work just fine; The new system doesn't seem to offer anything useful.
External NPC facegen data seems just as unnecessary. I guess it would make sense if two NPC records could point to the same facegen data, saving space... but as it stands you need to make a COPY for a dupped NPC? Just defeats the whole purpose, in my opinion... not to mention making it all so damn confusing and buggy with little to no tradeoff benefit.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was just one bundled file with all the needed data? Oh wait, it used to be that way. 8P
It's all a house of cards, I tell yah...

Anyway, I suppose I'll look into that and start building NPC facegen support into SkyProc sooner or later.
I'll probably finish up the rest of AV's content first, getting NPC meshes + weapons + stat variants done, and then move on to fixing humanoid variants afterwards.

@StarX. Downloaded the new 'fixed'' packages and checked them against what Leviathan1753 had uploaded and also compared with the Bellyache and sounaipr packages. I Have NOT installed and tested your new fixed packages (don't want to mess up my system any further) but I see something strange/peculiar. Its about the location of the specification.json file. An example in case of the Sabrecat Snow its located in ..\SkyProc Patchers\Automatic Variants\AV Packages\StarX AV Package\Sabrecat Snow\Skin. In the uploaded version of Leviathan1753 the specification.json file is located at ..\SkyProc Patchers\Automatic Variants\AV Packages\StarX AV Package\Sabrecat Snow. In this directory resides the json file AND the skin directory. Checked it also with Bellyache and Sounaipr packages, they also have the json file in the dir which contains the SKIN dir. If I interpret the README correctly this is the correct place.

I have a question:
Have you installed and tested your fixed files yourself and does it work for you?

@everyone. Has anyone downloaded the new fixed StarX packages and do they work for you (using placeatme statement or bat files)? I'm at the moment a wee bit scared to try it out myself. If I hear others got it working I would me more relaxed...

@everyone. I'm using Boss 2.01, NMM and wrye bash 295.5. I know this version of wrye bash doesn't play nice with Boss 2.0. In this thread someone has compiled the latest version of WB which should be compatible with Boss 2.01. I would really appreciate it if someone could supply me with that version.

wolverine2710:
The latest wrye bash version can be obtained from the svn at sourceforge. There is a tutorial (with pictures) under the Development title, in the release thread here:

This may need to go unsaid but I'd like to report a mod that throws out EDID errors, Interesting NPCs: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=8429. . Simply disabling the esp suffices.

Couple of questions. First, do each of the packages stack up on top of each other for example, combining bellache's textures with Starx to add even more variation? Also if I dont like certain textures from a package is there an easy way to not use it?

@4Skyrim.

First question. May I suggest a RTFM session of the AV README, its answered there. But YES you can all combine them, thats the philosphy of AV.

Second question. When running AV you can disable packages or parts of packages(.dds files). The trick is finding out wich .dds file to disable. ATM AV does not show a screenshot (to be created by author of a package) of a .dds file or a flattened model/picture of a .dds file in AV itself. I would suggest opening the .dds files by a image viewer like irfanview (do not forget to install the plugins package) to see which .dds files you like or not. You see a flattened version of the creature (not as it shown ingame). The directory name of the dir which contains the .dds file is the one you have to disable in AV. I know it sounds daunting but give it a try and you will find out thats its rather easy. Testing of the generated AV.esp and the variants can be easily done by using .bat files to spawn the creatures. The bat files can be found http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1366638-relwip-wolverines-collection-of-av-packages-ports-examples-skeletons-and-tools/

@Leviathan and others. I have a question about variant folders (eg outfits and eyes). When I open a .dds with for example irfanview I see multiple segments. Is it possible to have a variant folder for each segment? Whats the best way to determine how many variant folder each creatures has? Do I have to use the CK or Nifskope (newbie with regard to both). PERHAPS someone could make a list of variant folders for each creature which has been AV-tized by now. I think this would make it easier for future AV package creators. (BTW this would also help me quite a bit......)

@everyone. I want to create screenshots for some of the various creatures which have been av-tized (for personal use ATM). With that I mean how they are shown ingame. Figured out with help of Levi how to do this in the CK (well kind of). But I don't like it that much. StarX package do have excellent screenshots which were created by Nifskope he tells me. He also told me (see his thread) how to do this. But as I'm a total newbie I don't understand at all what he tries to tell me. Can anyone help or show me a few urls which can help me further. Again I only want to make screenshots of creatures as how they are shown ingame. I could take screenshots by spawning them in Skyrim but then I have a distracting background. not good

Looks like the spec files are indeed in the wrong location (at least in the giants one I downloaded). :bolt:
This would mean they don't get applied as variants as the package would be skipped. It's not unsafe to use, as prepping should keep it safe, and let you add them in properly later.

I thought this package transition would be easier. Sorry for all the confusion guys. 8(

This may need to go unsaid but I'd like to report a mod that throws out EDID errors, Interesting NPCs: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=8429. . Simply disabling the esp suffices.

Thanks! 8) I'll look into it.

Couple of questions. First, do each of the packages stack up on top of each other for example, combining bellache's textures with Starx to add even more variation? Also if I dont like certain textures from a package is there an easy way to not use it?

Yeah, they do. 8) Packages that target the same creature will have both sets of variants applied and the creature will pick randomly from all of them.

ATM, all you can do is what wolverine suggested. Find which you don't like using a viewer, and then disable those in the AV GUI. Eventually I'm going to try to get the GUI to display the pictures so it's easy to see/find.

What do you mean when you open a dds you get multiple segments? I always just get one flat "picture" (with some mipmaps, perhaps)... but never multiple layers or anything.
NIF files can have several .dds files as part of their model's textures, but each .dds texture is just "one thing", as far as I know.

I think you're talking about Variant Groups?
Variant Groups can be split up as the packager "sees fit". There's no right answer like "giants can have skin + clothes".
It's up to the packager to look at what he has and say "oh, I've got 5 clothes textures, and 5 skin textures... I'll put those in two groups to get 25 variants". Or he could keep them in one group and get 5 variants, each with a specific clothes + skin combination. It's up to the packager, though. He could separate any two textures that were part of the giant into separate groups.

Haha, you did. XD

I'll take a look at that code, thanks! 8)
You can temporarily uncheck the "minimize patch" setting, and it should skip that error, I think.

Hi did anyone reported some issues with Real Wildlife?

The texture are being replaced just fine but it seams like the loot system got broken.
Every animal from Real Wildlife cause me a CTD now.

And it started after installing AV.

did you start a new game? it is reported that installing AV mid game can cause bugs. Not sure about CTD's though.

Most people I've heard were able to get Real Wildlife + AV going without issues. Are you using a reliable load order manager? It might be breaking if your load manager is running the old load order protocols.

@Pralima87. I have Real Wildlife Skyrim (RWS), SkyTEST - Realistic Animals and Predators (SRAP) and Pride of Skyrim installed, apart from WATER and RCRN its relatively vanilla. Started with a new game (AND using AV right from the start with only Bellyache activated ATM, later on added all public available AV packages) and have had NOT a SINGLE CTD this far. Using WBSA 295.5, BOSS 2.01 and NMM. I don't start SKyrim using BOSS but always using the skse loader. I can backup my savegames and install CSA to find out if I'm getting CTD's as well. Will report back, if I don't forget....

I have not installed WB 296 yet. Is this one like WBSA (python interpreter included in the exe) or do I have to install python. Does it hurt when I use 295.5 with wrong load orders to generate a bashed.patch when I don't start Skyrim from WB. Mostly after using WB I run Boss to make sure my load order is in order. Because pride is NOT recognized yet I have to reorder that one in the Skyrim launcher manually (time consuming I know). Thanks for the BOSS Userlist Manager (BUM) tip. Had forgotten that one..
