Awesome game, jurassic rendering. It′s a shame

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 6:14 pm

Honestly my only major graphical concern is the poorly done shadowing.

no DX11 implementation is my other gripe, but tbh I don't think we'll see widespread dx11 on games that are also on consoles until the 360 is replaced and that replacement can also make use of the additional features. Sad but true.

I am being objective. You're not, as you're the one who created this topic stating how bad Skyrim looked to -you-

Red Dead is a pretty game, there's no denying that. But it's very easy to make an exceptionally pretty game when the landscape is practically the same across 80% of the game. Some desert with splotches of grass, a few cacti and some birds overhead. RDR is gorgeous, but I still think the artistic direction in Skyrim makes it a more beautiful game. 'Course, we're just talking about definitions of words here, and how we as individuals define beauty, so we'll never agree on this one.

You didn′t understand this post at all. That′s why, again, you are the one not being objective, don′t take it the wrong way.
We are not talking about art direction here, we are talking about technical stuff. In this context beautiful game is referencing to the render and other effects. Not the art, not the story etc..
just a few examples about why red dead redemption is objectively better (again, I am not talking about art, as the post title, I am talking about a the rendering and stuff like that)
Here is a list of technical stuff that red dead has and skyrim doesn′t:

- normal maps for muscles simulation
- camera dust, rain effects
-wet maps when character goes into water ( I′ve never seen that in any other game)
-volumetric lights
-sparkling stars
-etc..

All I am saying is that it is too bad that skyrim having such a great environment, modeling and yes, art direction, has such a mediocre rendering.
Maybe not a unreal engine, but at least a better one that this one.

Yes. It's called embellishment of memory, and is a real problem amongst gamers these days.

Respectfully, I think we collectively (as a community) are asking a little much. Bethesda did an a-okay job making a good looking game. They compensated for not putting in absolutely all of the bells & whistles by integrating an enormous amount of content.

Remember how in Morrowind the environment was sterile and didn't have any real life to it? The trees and bushes didn't move, and the characters were stiff and moved in a disjointed fashion? Remember the funky bugs here and there? In the end the title made up for it with by having an excellent in depth story-line and otherwise immersive environments.

At this point I think we're all just splitting hairs. It's a done deal. Bethesda is not likely to introduce a map-textures pack. If it's an easy fix they may do it.. but I wouldn't hold your breath. It is probable that they will address most of the game-stopping bugs and tons of little ones. I also expect stability and a possible UI fix if people pitch a big enough fit.

I think that they did a brilliant job.. but as with all things, my opinion and four bucks will get you a cup of coffee.

And here we have another case of personal opinion clashing together.

Knock it off.

No, it is a misunderstanding. I am talking about technique and he thought I was talking about art.
I work in the cg industry, and I am also a character modeler teacher at the university, so I a really know how art is open to hundreds of opinions.

DarfFlame, I didn′t understand. Skyrim is a realistic game graphically speaking. So according to you, if you can choose between a 4098x4098 shadow map resolution, and a 1024x1024, you would
choose the 1024, because 4098 would be more accurate?

I think that people here love so much skyrim, that it looks like I am attacking the game, when all I would like is to make it look better.

GoW3 does have dynamic lighting, but because the sources never move, the shadows never move.
...
Unreal games mostly bake everything. I am sure they don't have RT global illumination. It is mostly baked with Lightmass with some select objects casting RT shadows.

Thing is though that the size of the game has nothing to do with the visuals. Most of the rendering happens on the gpu whilst most other things are on the cpu

skyrim looks very gray. the textures are poor and the shadowing is [censored] and everything is very low in polygons

higher res texture pack, detail textures , dx11 and better lighting would fix these issues

(also animations could have been a lot better in a lot of places. Some animations look fantastic whilst others are just awefull)

For Skyrims graphics I think the draw/LOD distances are way too short.

I also hate the texture resolution inconsistency. Sometimes textures look great and other times they are so appauling you can see pixelation.

The shadows are also quite poor. Im running everything on ultra with everything turned up and shadows look like they are being cast by lego blocks.

hey hellreth,
yes they did an great job. Yesterday I just seated 10 minutes in one of the game′s tavern, listening to the musician.Just to feel the skyrim world there.
And maybe sometimes the community asks too much, but I don′t think I am talking about any thing impossible.

I guess the way I play that game makes ask for stuff that other players don′t care about. As I said before, I could spend 5 minutes looking to the shadow of a tree.
I work as character technical director in cg shorts, so maybe that′s why the details are so important to me.

It just seems that people will always find something to pick on or say is bad even when its mostly nothing.

did bethesda intend for textures to be so hi rez that when you slam your face againts objects it looks realistic? No.. because that isnt part of the gameplay xD.. Or is it? Dun dun dunnnnnnn D:

you all realize that they compressed this world into 6 gigs right? for the world to look as good as it does and having such a small amout of space for storage they did a amazing job, you guys need to get off your high hourses for once and look at a game for its content and what it provides rather than does it just look good, cause skyrim looks amazing to say the least the weather is fantastic the world is huge with things to do literly everywhere. to the guy who said oblivion looked better ....... really get your eyes checked and stop trying to sturr things up with a claim that has no standing, to the guy who posted this topic, really are you gunna complain that much they put out a 20 min gameplay video months ago you coulda seen all the graphics then but yet you still bought it and still wanna complain enjoy the game play it enjoy the story why does everybody have to hate on every game that comes out

It is awesome to see how the community defends the game. Yes, it′s an incredible. We all love it.
Why do you guys take good criticism as complains?
If I say "red dead redemption has a better render engine that skyrim" you′ll all jump to my throat saying :" No, no!!! you are wrong!! we hate you!!! Skyrim is the best!!" XD

Inkgerm, what you see in the 20 minutes videos do not represent the game. The are not going to show have your horse rides rocks in a 90 degree angle, or the poor textured places in the game, or any bugs. I bought the game knowing what I was buying.

And don′t say I hate the game, I love it. That′s why I have it.And that′s why I am spending time here talking to the community.
But people talk advice for insult when they are not objective.
