A coffin if you are a vampire, it is just an alcove, nothing more.

There is no lair for vampires or werewolves in Hearthfire, if you want that you will have to play the PC version and get the mod that has that.

Anyone else just skipping the cellar? I don't particularly care for it, too crowded and dark. I just stopped building cellars a while ago, I also think it makes my house load a little faster. And I think it prevents skeever attacks.

Well if the cellar is too crowded who's fault is that? You do not have to build everything on the list. If you think it too dark, take some torches down there to light the place up a bit more. Yes not having it would prevent skeever attacks, like you are really that afraid of a few rats?

I built it, but outside of having all of the shrines (and the child training dummy) I don't really use it for anything. I prefer not having to zone twice to use something inside my house, so I've been using mods to place all of those objects in the main building.

It was weird getting used to not building stuff in order to customize. Thankfully there's this mod: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/22791 so it's more about the touches you do add instead of the stuff you don't. Probably one of my favorite parts is crafting my own light sources instead of using the hit or miss ones you build from the carpentry tables.

On my first two Hearthfire playthroughs I built the cellars - leaving out different things to try and get different effects (vampy character left out the two lights which gave the ridiculously bright spotlight effect). The third time I left it unbuilt. I think I'll leave it unbuilt unless I'm a vampire from now on. The smithing stuff really feels more correct for me when it's outdoors (and since we have a chest next to the blacksmith anvil anyway - a single chest for ingot storage seems sufficient, thankfully bandits don't creep by and loot it!). The shrine was a nice idea, but for some reason I don't like have all 9 shrines together - would have been nice if I could just have a single shrine to Talos, or Dibella or whoever. I *could* just build the shrine I wanted, but the altar looks too big - like a base for a public toilet urinal wall. Wish there were more options for the basemant, but a multi-purpose shrine and an underground smithy aren't quite my cup of tea. If we could have shrine options - dedicated to certain divines complete with statue and choice of theme, or something else to build other than a smithy which you can already build above ground (like a cosy library since the one you can build is really claustrophobic) then it'd be nice to have, but as it is I'll skip it. The only thing I'll miss is the 5-slot weapons rack - but maybe the armory (once a mod comes which lets me build it as a North Wing) will have something like that.
