Batman: Any comic fans?

Recently, I've really been trying to get into the world of comic books, I tried a few years ago, often opting to read spiderman/Iron man and a few other Marvel comics, but they really didn't do it for me. I did enjoy the Noir editions of Xmen/Wolverine and spiderman for their Darker Nature however, but the flamboyance of most comics and their often convulsed and hard to jump into story lines often puts me off.

But the one comic I've always wanted to read is the Batman series, it's perfect for my tastes, dark and gritty mysteries with a taste of superhero prowess mixed in with some pretty amazing plot and very interesting and convincingly effective characters. But the problem is, a comic that's been going for aslong as batman has been can easily be the hardest to start reading. I've been searching and searching but the plot lines i've found (the different worlds, batman year 1, the detective comic etc) have sounded very extensive long running and hard to just jump into and enjoy. The ownership of a kindle makes it somewhat easier to acquire said comics but they just seem to go on for hundreds of issues with no clear start or end to them.

I did however stumble across http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Hush which I found to be a hugely satisfying read, and the art style was just fantastic, but I'm having trouble tracking down any similarly themed/drawn batman comics, be it a series or a standalone omnibus of sorts. So, could anybody recommend any?

Oh if it helps, I prefer Batman without the boy wonder brown nosing his way through every page. I don't know why but I really don't like the dike Grayson Robin/Night wing.

I loved Hush too. My friend bought me War Drums which is set straight after the events of Hush I think, although I haven't got around to reading it yet. Have you read the Killing Joke? The essential Batman book, IMO, although Year One and Arkham Asylum: A serious house on serious earth are great too.

Read it from top to bottom, then, when you reach the top, scroll down to the bottom and hit the left arrow.

I highly recommend reading Batman: Under the Red Hood if you know a fair bit about Batman already. It is a very great story that you will remember for a very long time. You should also check out the cartoon-adaptation once you finish reading it.

I recently read Year One and found it to be fairly good to. Not as good as Under the Red Hood, but still a well-made Batman story.

EDIT: After reading a bit of that wiki you linked, I think you should definitely get Under the Red Hood next, as there is something in that story that holds a massive connection with the one you read.

I came across the Red Hood on the wiki after posting this topic, it definately looks promising.

Is there any comic series related to the events of Arkham City? Or is that strictly stand alone?

If I recall correctly, Knightfall (which focuses on Bane I believe) is connected to the Arkham City timeline. So is The Killing Joke, which can actually be considered a prologue to Arkham Asylum in a way.

A little problem with finding Batman comics related to Arkham City is that Arkham City incorporates many Batman universes in it I believe, so what happens in one Batman comic may contradict something in another (Look at Hush and Under the Red Hood and you'll see an example)

That being said, there is actually a Batman:Arkham Asylum comic that is highly praised, so definetly check that one out.
